Their arrogance keeps them from fleeing in their mind they will never be caught. They believe they are smarter than everyone else especially LE and have a refusal to believe anything else after all long how long they have gotten away with it.still would have loved to see Deangelos reaction if detective Holes had walked to the door and asked for a DNA sample! Would Deangelo refuse, then panic? Flee the country? I can't imagine what would have been flying in Deangelos head with Holes at the door..tense moment
I still want to know more about the NorCal rapist..seems very unremarkable though..he really isn't in the same league as Deangelo
I'm probably in a minority, but I do reckon DeAngelo would have been identified eventually, regardless of DNA.
One day an EARONS sleuth would have come across a newspaper article about a cop shoplifting dog repellent in EAR country and it would have spiralled from there.
The EARONS case took 10-15 years to heat up, and a lot of good researchers and investigators got involved.
The case had too many interesting elements for people not to: letters, maps, three toed dogs, replaced unloaded guns, outrun cops and fbi agents etc etc...
Nobody was really mentioning NORCAL until a few months ago, when Quester got involved on his site, and a separate Norcal forum was set up.
NORCAL didn't leave us with hundreds of crimes to analyse like VR/EARONS did.
Luckily EAR was a victim of his own 'success' as an offender: he was too 'remarkable' and he gave us too much to work with.
NORCAL was, as you say, unremarkable (unlike DeAngelo it doesn't seem that Waller was a hothead with any sort of an arrest record) but it could be argued that he was in some ways even more patient and harder to catch than EARONS.
