We've gone back and forth a lot about the Maggiores over in the Victims section. I'm of the opinion that he did kill the Maggiores and that the impetus for the killing was similar to the shooting of Rod Miller. While the Maggiores may not have chased him over a fence or anything like Miller did, I do suspect that they or their dog may have caught him in the middle of a prowl and either confronted or startled him in such a way to incur his wrath. I don't think they knew him, but Katie Maggiore was apparently being stalked and called, so he may have recognized them. With the amount of prowling he did in that same small area, it's possible he would have recognized any number of people while he was out and about.
We don't know, but this is where I lean.
I agree with you.

Chapter 50
"In 2010, homicide detective Ken Clark, joined a group of retired officers who met regularly, continuing to investigate the EAR. Detective Clark brought everyone up to speed on the Magiorre investigation. There were, and still are, a ton of theories and rumors (mostly rumors ) about that double homicide. Detective Clark was able to dispel some of those rumors. It was felt this double homicide was most likely committed by the East Area Rapist. Shoelaces , already formed into a loose loop, had been found at the crime scene.
