I don't think anyone doubts Larry Crompton's sincere desire to close this case and bring some closure to the victims and their families. He has done a lot of good by publishing a detailed account of the EAR crimes and making it freely available to anyone who cares to read it. I also believe he has no desire whatsoever to cause any harm to the victims of the EAR, and that his insensitive remarks in ST are not due to any calculated effort to smear a victim or cause them grief.
Larry Crompton deserves praise for his efforts so far as this case is concerned, but at the same time he is responsible for causing a great deal of distress to a victim, and that is something I believe he should atone for by speaking with Sunny, apologizing to her, retracting the questionable statements he made about her and excising them from any online or print copies of his book.
We have to remember that all humans are flawed. People who are overwhelmingly good can still have biases and prejudices that cause them to say and do things that are wrong. My impression, from reading Sudden Terror, is that Larry Crompton has some outdated and offensive views about women. This does not mean that he does not care deeply about the case or about the victims. It just means that he has certain skewed beliefs and that what he wrote is unacceptable and does not belong in a book about a serial rapist and killer regardless of whether it is true or false. It makes no difference if a rape victim has sexual preferences that fall outside Larry Crompton's ideas of "normal" or "acceptable." Suggesting in any way that she may have enjoyed the attack or that she herself was sexually deviant is beyond the pale and he needs to apologize. At the same time, this egregious violation of the victim does not somehow cancel out all the positive things he has done for the case and for other victims of sexual assault.
If no one can find a "pre-Sunny thread where there is criticism," what would that tell you?
