A poster asked me my opinion on the dog: "But one thing that wasn’t mentioned in the new material was the dog connection, particularly how it relates to O/M. I can’t remember who mentioned this but LE allegedly followed the killer’s footprints away from the crime scene, alongside a set of paw prints. It seems they’re convinced he used the stolen bike to get away, but if they also found foot/paw prints that followed the same escape route I would find that too much to be a coincidence.
I’ve also heard the dog being present at O/M was just a rumor and current LE is unsure of its origin.
What’s your take on the dog story?

I thought his question was something that would be good to put on the board for discussion.
My opinion:
I noticed that MM in "I'll Be Gone In The Dark" did not mention that LE has discounted the dog theory like she posted on the board. But she also did not mention the dog paw prints that were found. I recall answering her on the board that I did not agree with LE discounting the dog prints. To my unprofessional, limited knowledge way of thinking, I don't see any reason to discount the dog just because the paw prints thought to incriminate Brett Glasby no longer did now that he had been cleared, or just because Gene Tomas came forward explaining it was his dog that had run into the yard on Berkeley and was stabbed. So Gene Tomas was cleared and was not the GSK but undoubtedly his dog was stabbed by the GSK. I do not understand LE discounting the dog....there were paw prints or there were not.
1) There was dog paw prints in Offerman’s patio (they had even specified a white German Shepherd.) They were very specific about them, the direction they traveled etc. Le took the prints to experts who told them that the dog did not necessarily have 3 toes though. The angle of the paw print, or possibly a leaf under the dog paw, could make it look that way. It was not a rumor.
2) The mother and daughter jogging at 11: 00 p.m. saw the suspicious blond male with a German Shepherd standing facing the home on Merida which was directly behind the Domingo residence with a German Shepherd.
3) There were paw prints in the Domingo yard. Debi Domingo posted on the board that she clearly remembers LE asking her if there should be a reason for dog paw prints to be her yard and she said no, they did not own a dog.
4) There were paw prints found alongside the GSK’s shoe prints on the dirt path that ran behind the homes on N. Kellogg and the creek, but I think it cannot be said they were accompanying the GSK conclusively. A lot of people walk on that path, and I wager a lot of people walk their dogs there.
5) A newspaper article in Goleta mentioned a woman on Berkeley reported to police that she continually came home from work to find her German Shepherd unleashed in the yard. (This leads me to believe that he befriended that dog and took him out very late at night as an excuse to be out late walking around the neighborhood.)
6) There is an Orange County Register newspaper article which stated: “In 1981, neighbors saw a man and a dog running away from the Irvine home of a bludgeoning victim.
Detectives said the killer may have used the animal to appear less suspicious as he stalked his prey, making possible witnesses think that he was simply a man walking his dog.” (So was this just some innocent neighbor out for a run with his dog? or did they spot the GSK? I wish we could find out what time of day the man was spotted running.)
7) Port reported on the board some time ago that dog hairs were also found in the homes of N. Cal rape victims. (I had not heard of that before and would love to have more information on that.)
A bike was stolen from the open garage door of a parole officer’s home on Via Bolzano the night of the thwarted attack on H/H, Queen Ann, 10/01/79.
The night Offerman/Manning were murdered, Dec 30, 1979, A neighbor of Offerman's on Avenida Pequena noticed his bicycle stolen, (estimated time it was stolen was 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.) from an area outside his residence. Lengths of twine were left at this location. His home showed no signs of attempted burglary. The bicycle was located several blocks away near 936 Crown.
Back to the dog. It was initially reported that the turkey thrown down on the patio/kitchen floor in Offerman's condo indicated the turkey was fed to the dog whose paw prints were found in the patio. Who brings a dog to a murder? What if the dog barks etc.? I do not believe the dog belonged to the GSK or some relative he may have been staying with in the neighborhood. What if when running and escaping from the crime LE caught the dog, which could be a very possible thing to happen and then follow it home?
My conclusion is that the dog was brought earlier while he was out prowling and that when the paw prints were deposited. I believe late at night he could retrieve or return the dog as he saw fit. I believe when he came back later to attack O/M and was in the process, I suggest he tied them up, went to the kitchen do do his eating routine, heard Offerman getting loose, threw the turkey down and ran into the bedroom where he killed them. So I'm concluding there was a dog there earlier and that the turkey had nothing to do with the dog.
If the dog belonged to some acquaintance or relative of the EAR that could be a major clue and help find him, but if it was just his M.O. to borrow dogs from time to time to have an excuse to be out late in a neighborhood, I don't see how it will help lead to him.
