Hello everyone! I'm new to the board, but not to the case; I decided to read both Crompton and Shelby's books, and each of Quester's case-by-case analyses before posting, but I've been following the board for about a year now. I'll make my introduction brief, I'm an undergrad physics student in New England, who's been absolutely hooked on this case since learning about it. (Typing this on mobile, so hopefully the formatting survives)
The sheer number of offenses and scope of prowling/burglary makes me think that there's no possible way the offender could escape EVERY time, yet 40 years later the UNSUB remains just that. This leads me to my first assertion: he's gotta be in the system somewhere. Even if the files don't exist to this day, at one time he surely got popped for stealing a bike/car/B+E/etc.
You don't get good at something without practice, and EAR practiced constantly. He must have a red flag or two attached to his real name.
Another point to his prowling tactics, the mystery of the victims dogs remaining silent, I believe is easily explained. EAR knew that if a target had a dog, it could be won over before the attack, recognize him by scent during the attack, and remain calm. This could be accomplished by as simply as bringing 4-5 dog treats with him during a recon prowl. When he arrived at the target house, he could wait for the dog to notice his presence, then feed him a treat or two, and be on his way. Repeat over the course of weeks, and the dog doesn't fear the man. Additionally, a treat or two won't affect the dogs appetite enough for the owner to notice, especially if they're out of the house. Related to this, I believe his scratching of window screens was surely to find out whch houses had dogs/light sleepers.
My final observation at the moment is this: the VR composite and one of the Maggiorie sketches look incredibly similar. There's certainly not enough evidence to be sure EAR has anything at all to do with the Maggiorie's. While I don't think there's enough to definitively say VR went on to become EAR either, the similarities in their MO's are striking. I've seen people claim EAR never abducted anyone while VR tried to, but this isn't true. EAR took one girl out to a levee in an aborted attack early on. This makes me wonder if there are more murder which we don't know about, in which he disposed of the body.
Excited to be part of the board, greetings everyone!
