RANCHO CORDOVA --
The U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations is asking for the public's help with a 37-year-old cold case.
"At the time of the homicide, the East Area Rapist (EAR) was active in Northern California and the suspect could have been the EAR," a Facebook post reads.
Nearly 37 years after Sgt. Brian Maggiore and his wife Katie, were killed while walking their dog in 1978, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations is the first agency to officially name a potential connection between the East Area Rapist and the Rancho Cordova couple's death.
In the late 1970s, authorities say the East Area Rapist broke in to dozens of women's homes and raped them, while their husbands were kept silent. EAR has also been linked to 10 murders in Southern California.
Investigators with the U.S. Air Force told FOX40 Tuesday they recently learned about evidence left at the scene, two shoe laces tied together and knotted in a specific way.
Sacramento County sheriff's detectives confirm EAR had a similar signature. However, detectives say they've known about the shoe laces for years.
Air Force investigators reopened the case last year after receiving a tip.
"EAR would have the woman bind her husband so he could take them to another room," Gian Quasar said.
Quasar, an Elk Grove resident, has spent the last four years piecing the evidence
together.
"The EAR was not a rapist ... he was a sexual terrorist" Quasar added, stating that he
believes the Maggiores were not the EAR's typical victims.
"My contention is ... that the (Maggiores) saw him in a compromised position, indicating that he was the East Area Rapist," he said.
With victims across the state, Quasar says this case is crucial as it is Sacramento's only chance to prosecute, due to the statute of limitations on his other rapes.
The case is not cold. Three Sacramento County sheriff's detectives are
working the case regularly.
"We have vetted thousands of suspects over the years," Detective Kenneth Smith said. "We believe we will catch him, we just need people with information to come forward."
Anyone with information should contact Sacramento Sheriff's Department.
