I dont mean from you, but if Crompton said it im saying its nonsense. Never underestimate an author trying to sex up his book. A detective arriving hours or so after an attack suddenly turning into a bloodhound. No, I dont believe it for a second. I made a thread asking what we really know about EAR. Im calling this speculation bordering on utter rubbish from Crompton.
Yeah, I think this is about Crompton adding dramatic flair to his writing. Sometimes readers either misinterpret or recall it wrongly. (No offense meant to anyone.) To take a couple of guesses of where the odor confusion comes from, here are two passages from HaP:

Like jackydee said, this is just Crompton sexing things up. Not my favorite approach to a nonfiction book.

I thought Crompton himself said he could smell the EAR when he entered an attack house. He said he would know him if he walked past him on the street. Then the bloodhounds seemed to go crazy.Page 132, Victim 6, 10/9/76
“I think I heard him carrying paper bags out of the house. He tied my feet and dragged the rug over to the post on the patio and tied me to it. He took my rings off my fingers and I didn’t hear him open the gate, but I guess he left then. I got my blindfold off, spit the cloth out and untied my feet from the post. I couldn’t get my hands untied. I tried to cut the ropes when I got in the house, but I couldn’t, he cut the phone cord so I couldn’t call for help. I didn’t know what to do so I waited about two hours until Mary rang the doorbell. When I let her in, she cut me free and we went to her house and I took a shower while she called the police. I guess I shouldn’t have taken a shower, but I just had to. I still feel filthy. I still smell him. I’ll always smell him.”
Stone wanted to tell her that the smell, the memory, the nightmare, would go away with time but he knew it never would. He waited for her to settle back into herself.

“It’s going to be all right,” Stone tried to comfort her. “A female investigator will be here soon to work with you,” He knew when he first entered the room that EAR had been in the house. The feeling, the presence, was heavy in the air. He could smell the evil. “Can you describe the man who tied you up?” Stone asked as he knelt beside the victim.
