Janice Dickinson seems to be one of the most criticized alleged victims of Cosby. We need to remind ourselves that rape - including acquaintance rape - is a terrible trauma. People cope with trauma in different ways. She has struggled with anorexia, alcoholism and drugs which are pretty common among victims of sexual abuse.
To add insult to injury for the victims, Cosby went on to play a well-respected character in a very popular TV show. People seem to have transferred that respectability to Cosby, himself, even though he was just a character in a TV show. Then, Cosby went on to lecture black males, in particular, about behavior that would "embarrass your family". Here is a sample of his famous "Pound Cake Speech":
"But these people, the ones up here in the balcony fought so hard. Looking at the incarcerated, these are not political criminals. These are people going around stealing Coca-Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of pound cake! And then we all run out and are outraged, ‘The cops shouldn’t have shot him.
What the hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand? I wanted a piece of pound cake just as bad as anybody else, and I looked at it and I had no money. And something called parenting said, ‘If you get caught with it you’re going to embarrass your mother.’ Not ‘You’re going to get your butt kicked.’ No. ‘You’re going to embarrass your family."
(I find it very interesting that Cosby chose to lecture other males about "stealing pound cake" and embarrassing their families. I imagine Freud would have a field day analyzing these statements....)
Mocking Cosby for his hypocrisy became a part of the routine of the comedian Hannibal Buress:
“Bill Cosby has the f–ing smuggest old black man public persona that I hate,” Buress told the audience last week. “‘Pull your pants up, black people. I was on TV in the ’80s. I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom.’ Yeah, but you raped women, Bill Cosby. So, brings you down a couple notches… I don’t curse on stage. But yeah, you’re a rapist.”
The rape accusations against Cosby finally gained immense media attention - when these October 2014 comments by Buress in a show in Philadephia when viral on the internet.
