Profiling has some value but, on its own, profile without a database of people to compare against is not very useful. Also, profiling still results in people going in many different directions without knowing whether any will bear fruit. It's unlikely that EAR was, for example, a former military man in law enforcement who did construction on the side while moonlighting at a wrecking yard. Some of these are possible but not all simultaneously. And it's difficult to know which avenues will match reality.
If we look at what we know (more or less definitively) about EAR, the list is very small. I would say that we can be virtually certain that he was a caucasian male, born between 1945 and 1958, between 5'7" and 6'1" tall. And these things, assuming EAR is alive, would all be the same today. He was, at the time, likely physically fit, but we don't know what that means now. And we know that, from 1976 to 1979, he likely lived in the Sacramento County area.
My entire approach is based on a guess that EAR was a high school graduate in Sacramento County between 1963 and 1979. Possibly a Visalia high school graduate during that time.
This site: old-friends.co/ seems to have a large database of high school grads.
For example, here is the list of grads of Cordova HS from Rancho Cordova HS.

Here is a list of Sac County high schools.

From the old-friends.co/ home page, you can search for different schools. It asks you for a class. If you remove everything from behind the five digit number and change "class" to "school", you should get a list of all graduates in their database.
These lists may not be complete and I'd be interested in hearing from any Sacramento County grads on here whether they are on this list or not. It would be interesting to know how complete these lists are. If you believe that EAR was the VR and you believe that EAR graduated from a Visalia high school, you should check out Visalia high schools as well.
This won't be a guarantee. There is maybe a one third chance that EAR was a Sac County high school graduate during this time frame. But that might be worth it. Pick a bunch of names and, based on publicly available data, figure out whether people bear further scrutiny. You can eliminate females. Based on the data, you can eliminate those who either died before 1986 or were out of the country during crimes. Otherwise, figure out if any people are beyond scrutiny.
As usual, forum rules apply. Look on your own and, if names warrant further investigation, ask others for help where required (without names being published).
We don't have much working in our favor vs official channels but we have numbers and time. If we all looked at every male graduate of Sacramento County (and Visalia) high schools from 1963 to 1979, we would very possibly identify EAR.
Can we break these lists down to investigate using public resources and identify those who warrant further investigation (i.e., meet geographic criteria and aren't obviously eliminated)?
Thoughts?
