There's difference of opinion among the various scientists as to which came first, the head blow or the strangling. Just as there is difference of opinion about whether Patsy's handwriting is a match. If it was indeed Burke who killed his sister, it's hard to believe that the parents were so stupid that they thought they could sweep the whole thing under the rug by such a phantasmagorical subterfuge. They could have just turned the kid in and the whole thing would be completely forgotten by now.
Also, if they had just called 911 and told the truth, I'm not sure exactly what would have happened to Burke, but he would not have done prison time, because of his age. At least, that's my understanding. Ramsey had access to lawyers and he would have known this. So it's just hard to believe they were that stupid. In fact, I would say they were both fairly intelligent.
You can't prove a negative. It can't be proven there was not an intruder that did it, nor can anybody prove the "Burke did it" scenario, or even the "John did it" or the "Patsy did it" scenarios did not take place. Everybody's just guessing.
I think "sweep the whole thing under the rug" is a misleading statement. The thing was never going to be swept under the rug under any circumstances. The Ramsey's were going to be under an intense amount of scrutiny either way. What the Ramsey's could have prevented by making the intruder claim was preventing the family from being ripped apart. Burke(this assumes he's the one responsible) would likely have been taken away from the family unit. From one moment having two beautiful young kids to the next moment having no beautiful kids in your home is a plausible motive for the invention of an intruder.
