He was lucky, but he was also incredibly good at what he did.
Even if you take LE out of the equation it's absolutely astonishing that he wasn't caught, or even seen more.
No matter how you look at it, this guy was a master. He was a ghost.
So much prowling, that many break ins, an absurd number of assaults. In an area where people were aware of the threat. It's unheard of.
Someone who never leaves a fingerprint.
Never appears without a mask.
Doesn't wear the same outfit for more than one crime!
Deliberately teases LE and the community.
Leaves so many fake clues that he could be 10 different people.
Can enter peoples homes without being noticed.
Takes what he wants from people with or without them present.
- that's basically the blueprint for the "perfect" criminal.
It's not a good feeling to admit, but this guy should not be underrated in any way, shape or form.
You don't get away with that much because of luck or LE or someone not reporting strange sounds.
He could have been caught 10.000 different ways 10.000 different times.
I think many people underestimate just how hard it would be to stay in the shadows while doing that kind of thing. It's impossible and I can't even imagine a theory about how he did that.
All I can say is that he knew what he was doing. It's simply unbelievable.
His persona as EAR was a full-time job or more. I believe he ran or biked long distances to many of the victim's homes--no license plates that way. No conspicuous cars sitting around for the police to notice. No noise. No headlights.
Per one article, during his lone encounter with police, he "outmaneuvered" the most athletic guy on the force. Victims described slender, muscled legs--runner's legs imo.
He might have been a college student, but it's unlikely he could have kept his nighttime schedule and sought an advanced degree or worked a morning job at the time of the Sacramento attacks. Humans have to sleep. But a college student who scheduled afternoon or night classes? Sure. That's possible.
