I just listened to a POD cast last night (that was released on April 8, 2018) on the Criminology website. Some of the information was new to me and quite interesting. They interviewed Ray Biondi (is Ray there?) the lead detective on the EAR case in Sacramento and Ken Clark, a Sacramento PD investigator.
Ray Biondi and Ken Clark provided info on the Maggiore murders and a possible connection of the EAR to the Maggiores:
1) The evening the Maggiores were murdered, there were two men seen walking in the area. They were interviewed and cleared of being the EAR. The detectives feel the confusion of some of the witnesses seeing these two men (who were walking home in the area) led to the possibility that EAR was two people. The detectives felt the Maggiore murders were committed by only one person and this person was definitely the EAR (due to the shoelace found at the scene).
2) Before moving into their La Verta Ct. apartment, the Maggiores lived for a short time at an apartment complex located at 10680 Coloma Road (a short distance to their new apartment). This apartment complex is located directly across the street from the 7-Eleven store that the police set up an EAR sting at (it didn't work because LE were too obvious that they were staking out the store). Apparently, one of the officers wore a non-uniform shirt at the stake out, but was still wearing his uniform pants and shoes. Could the EAR and the Maggiores have lived in the same apartment complex? These apartments even 40 years ago were quite run down. The suspected EAR was at the 7-Eleven often before the botched stake out.
3) Brian Maggiore's employment was as a military police officer who oversaw traffic and the issuing of tickets at Mather AFB. Because so many cars are associated with the EAR maybe he had a run in with Brian? Back then Mather AFB was a big part of the community.
4) Note: Some individuals feel the EAR had a wrecking yard connection because he used so many junker cars and license plates run by LE came back unregistered. I just wanted to point out that this apartment complex is only a few blocks from my favorite 1970's wrecking yard (near Coloma and Sunrise--it's not there anymore) where I got parts for a 1968 Toyota Corona (just like one of the cars possibly used by EAR).
The interview also includes some interesting information about a security guard that was suspected and then cleared.
