I have reviewed the original trial transcripts and much of the post conviction relief briefs filed in the WM3 case. I believe that there is still enough evidence to convict the three, even if you discard the questionable bits (like Griffis).
My opinion is that the State of Arkansas was between a rock and a hard place. They knew there was no way to seat an unbiased jury due to the publicity of the multiple movies, newspaper editorials, etc. So, they had enough evidence to convict, but knew their chance of getting a jury seated was very low, and any conviction would likely just result in challenges to the jury selection process. On top of that a few of the officers ran into some issues questioning their integrity after the trial. The Alford plea was the result.
