Using the timeline Morf has posted, I compared side by side the activities of the early Sacramento burglaries, the VRS and EAR , and of course ONS.
Here is Morf's timeline:
Born 11/8/1945 in NY
Graduated Folsom High School (6/1964)
Began Basic training (10/1964)
Completed Basic Training (12/1964)
Served 22 months as a gun lineman in North Vietnam (? until 6/1967?)
Engaged but never married (1970)
Worked at Sierra Crane and Hoist Co of New Castle (5/1970)
Became LEO in Exeter (5/19/1973)
Married at Auburn First Congregational Church (his wife was from Citrus Heights) (11/10/1973)
Promoted to sergeant in charge of investigating burglaries and methods to prevent them (5/11/1976)
Fired from Auburn police force after trying to shop lift dog repellent and a hammer from a Citrus Heights drug store (8/29/1979)
-chose to forfeit job rather than answer questions or pursue an administrative hearing - arrest involved him being tied to a chair (need cite)
First child born (9/1981)
Second child born (9/1986)
Began employment at Save Mart's Roseville distribution center 1990
Mother passes away (8/21/2010)
Worked a truck mechanic up until 4/2018
Divorced 1991 (a lot of people saying separated, NOT divorced)
Arrested 4/25/2018
So here are the comparisons:
In 1964 he graduates from Folsom HS (so he is in the Sacramento area).
Returns from service in 1967 ?, and in 1970 we have him in New Castle (still in Sacramento area).
1972 and 1973 early Sacramento burglaries take place (he is still in Sacramento area ?)
5/19/73 - becomes a LE office in Exeter (so now he is Visalia) Sacramento burglaries stop. Visalia activities begin.
1974 and 1975 Visalia activity (first attack 3/19/74) , so he becomes the VRS while he is an active LE officer in Auburn.
Then he leaves Visalia and moves to Sacramento (I do not have an exact date) and EAR activity starts - first attack 6/18/1976
Joins the Auburn police department (not sure of date).
Last EAR attack up north 7/5/1979
Fired from force 8/29/79 a month later (based on what he was stealing, looks like he intended to continue).
10/1/1979 - first EAR/ONS attack down south. It should be noted, this attack was aborted, and EAR lost control of situation. An ex-FBI agent came upon scene. It is noted that LE was not sure if suspect intended to kill the couple. Guessing he did.
Now when I say, what did we miss, hindsight is 20/20. But many folks on this site were on the right track. I think we got a bit sidetracked with the composites and lost sight of the timeline.
Many folks believed he was LE, and they were right. Logic and a lot of listening to profilers tells us a traumatic event happened in 1979. Typically death of parent, death of spouse, loss of job, etc.
Well if we looked for a cop who lived in the Sacramento area, who lost his job in 1979, we might have noticed him. I must say, it looks to me like he tried to stay off the grid by becoming LE not in the town he was traumatizing but in a nearby town.
I wish it was as easy to have said, Google, give me all the police firings for cause in and around the Sacramento area in the 1978-1980 timeframe. But you would have thought after 40 years LE might have checked out this angle. The notation that he was stealing dog repellant is a scary clue.
I think he knew it was too hot up north and that's why he traveled south to do his killings. He had already expanded his original zone with his later EAR crimes.
Holes was right, he was a commuter killer.
I think he was so humiliated and enraged that he had decided to get even (he had only killed before for self preservation). That explains the brutality and personal nature of his killings down south.
