Well for the longest time (1988-1998 or so) I just thought it was ALA, because the only source of info on Z for many of us, until the internet, was the Yellow Book. Weirdly, after years of being all, "There's no way it was ALA! The physical evidence don't match!" I am now coming back to ALA as a suspect. Out of all the known suspects, ALA had the most circumstantial evidence pointing toward him. And as Voigt recently pointed out on his site, Zodiac's DNA profile may not be Zodiac's. There may not even be a DNA profile. Which means that ALA is now currently at the top of my suspect list again. If we look at only the physical evidence then there's no way it could be ALA. If we look at everything else BUT the physical evidence, then the best bet is ALA.
After the events of the last week, my #2 on the suspect list is "someone LE has never ever considered as a suspect."
I think Ross Sullivan murdered Cheri Jo Bates. But I don't think he was the Zodiac, nor do I think Z killed Bates. Z had a habit of taking credit for crimes he didn't commit. He only claimed credit for Bates after a journalist started pointing out similarities in public, and only then did he take credit - with an additional brag: "There are a whole hell of a lot more down there." I think he was bluffing on that count.
As for the other suspects:
Rick Marshall: nope, no motive, no phsycial evidence tying him to Z
William Grant: Another big nope
Larry Kane: come on....
Fred Manalli: interesting guy, fascinating if he was Z, but very doubtful. He might have had something to do with the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker murders, though.
Ed Edwards: sigh....no, but I'm sure Edwards would have loved to claim credit for Z's crimes.
Again, after this week, my money is on "Guy they never even looked at."
Yeah and I've actually thought it had to be an under the radar guy for Z for a long time before JJD. This makes me think that even more, though before this I wouldn't have considered former LE for Zodiac either....but now I wouldn't put it off the table.
Oh, and BTW:
Richard Gaikowski might be THE WORST POSSIBLE Z suspect in the whole Rogue's gallery. His entire "place" in the pantheon of suspects is due to an insane person stalking and collecting info on him, and due to Voigt not being able to understand what was going on in the Bay Area in the late 60s. I swear: if Voigt's parents had been hippies, there's no way he would have misinterpreted so many headlines and stories published in the "Good Times" newspaper. Apart from a few pet Voigt theories, there is NOTHING compelling about Gyke as a suspect.
