His world crumbled. He couldn't believe that the past would still come to haunt him. And now he knows his freedom is gone. In prison for the rest of his life. He is very angry with himself. He feels hopeless, because he still wanted to live his life (free), now that he had just retired and all. It's also unbelievably absurd to him. If he stopped doing those things decades ago, he just can't come to terms with the discrepancy of time. Because he isn't "that guy" anymore, haven't been for a long time. But still he was that guy anyway, and so responsible. They have now found him and are putting him into prison until he dies, because for them he is still "him". To himself he isn't anymore the "him" he was then. It's a mental paradox to him, because he knows rationally that he can't do anything about it, and that of course he is still physically the same person who committed the crimes. He has dissociated himself completely from "those times", and now it again became real and he's shocked. Panicked, angry, agitated etc. Hating on himself. He had some fight/flight response or some self-destructive reaction to the situation, and that's why he was given heavy sedatives. It wasn't an act. He doesn't know how to react to the inner contradiction now that the crimes have finally caught up with him and caught him. His fatigued weak voice was because of the sedation, but it was also a sign of his depressive resignation after the primary anger had worn off. He was beginning to die at that moment, and even though catatonia was Holes' figure of speech, he might have come closer than he himself believed in regards to the literal sense too. The situation without any avenues of escape can result in such freezening. He knows there's no way out of this, and this was basically it. No "act" would change the fact that he will still stay there where he doesn't want to be. It wouldn't change anything about what the situation basically is and will be.
