Excellent points, trabuco. As others have mentioned, J.J.D. didn't start peeping, prowling, and doing anything EAR related as a 30-31 year old circa 75/76--whatever flaws marred #1 in Jun. 76 did not stop him from successfully conducting that attack. Even in that attack, there was a degree of confidence there indicative of his pre-planning and his willingness to do others harm--that was the one in which he rhythmically tapped his knife's hilt against the door jamb while whispering #1's name. In some EAR attacks, the victims reported feeling as though J.J.D. was "scared" until the victim(s) were completely bound--I chalk this up to another one of the many red herrings he threw out at his victims and investigators: one second, he's a frenetic, furious, foul-mouthed offender psychologically torturing his victims in their very bedrooms; the next second, he's a whiny, maudlin, crybaby puke hypeventilating over "Mommy!" or "Bonnie!" Enigma and Contradiction by default--and by design. Whatever the motive behind the crying jags, he was always in control--he had to be; he knew the consequences in his high-stakes game if he "slipped." The crying could've been another means by which he could conceal his identity--or his profession, rather; because who's going to believe a trained cop is moonlighting as a rapist?!--and an emotionally unbalanced freak at the same time?! In particular, as it relates to Sacramento's East Area: he grew up there in the late 50s and early 60s, when those developments were being erected. He knew all the hiding spots and ratholes like the back of his hand--it was no accident he cropped up in Sacramento following the disastrous McGowen stakeout in Visalia.
I cannot emphasize the following point enough: despite his planning, despite his (mostly) meticulous approach, he was and is still a mortal, a man; he made his share of mistakes, and in one or two instances, he was lucky to've slithered away with his miserable pear-shaped hide. In my gut and in my heart, Goleta III--in conjunction with the then upcoming arrival of Daughter #1--was quite the stark reality check for him; no one commits hundreds of home-invasions/. And Inv. Pool of Orange Co. said it best: "he never stuck his neck out completely." That was true in 1978, and it was true in 2018--well, up until that pesky D.N.A. match upset his forty-two year anonymity. Joey is just further proof in the puddin' of the old truism: "Times Change, People Don't."
Some time back--both here and at the "originalnightstalker" ProBoards, one of the EAR victims was courageous enough to share what was (up to that point) an unknown event to anyone who's ever reviewed the EAR/ONS cases: to his credit, one very brave little boy displayed more courage than even Medal of Honor recipients; despite his father and mother being bound and worked over by J.J.D., he never gave in and he never submitted to the psychopathic "gorilla"--if you're familiar with the account, then you know why I say "gorilla"--that snapped up his ski mask to reveal the pudgy fat face of a bent Auburn cop: "I'm a MAN! Just like your daddy!" The same jerk that cried and sobbed over "Mommy!" was actually trying to frighten and cower a young boy, and why? "Because he could"--and because he joined the police department to become a more efficient criminal. It's not an original idea, but to his credit: I always like to say he dedicated himself to his craft, and what better measure of dedication than masquerading as "a hunter" of predators--while using that knowledge to further himself as a predator?
Do you one better, trabuco: not only did he learn a trick or two from watching Sharon's work, but I cannot shake the feeling that Sharon is remaining quiet for reasons other than the stigma associated with being married to a recently identified serial murderer. There's more to it that what's been seen on the surface--in particular, the viciousness and the violence of the explosive arguments between herself and Joey.

I appreciate the kind words, trabuco, but hats off to you--you got my gears spinning!
Sincerely, I'm still reeling over the fact that he was a police officer (and a veteran!) and that he started the EAR phase at 30-31 years old--from the mental/emotional perspective, I didn't think his was a personality stable enough to keep a steady job, especially one requiring discipline like working as a police officer, or serving a tour of duty in the military. I really thought it was a psychopathic--if criminally precocious--and very athletic kid (say 18-21 circa 1976) who started terrorizing Sacramento. As the EAR/ONS cases show: things AIN'T always what they appear to be.
