So far, we know that DeAngelo is likely responsible for at least 13 murders:
Claude Snelling (VR): Shot during botched home invasion kidnapping
Brian and Katie Maggiore (EAR): Gunned down in the street, possibly as witnesses
And then the 10 ONS murders in Southern California
Over the years I have seen a lot of people make a lot of suggestions about other crimes that could and/or should be considered as a possible DeAngelo murder. Many of these are really intriguing. In particular:
PG&E Murders in Granite Bay in 1977 (likely murdered due to being witnesses similar to Maggiore's)
Donna Richmond and Jennifer Armour in Visalia/Exter area
Cindy Wanner and Cherilyn Hawkley in Granite Bay in the early 1990s.
I have read a lot about these kinds of cases over the years, mostly because I've always been of the impression that, if EAR/ONS was alive and was indeed a monster hiding in plain sight all this time, then there likely are a lot more victims out there that just never got connected for one reason or another.Whether or not that will ever be proven is a mystery, but I think it's worthwhile to take another look at certain kinds of unsolved cases to see if they can be connected to DeAngelo.
Most of these cases that get posted here are murders that are similar in nature to DeAngelo's primary M.O. Mostly women, either killed in their homes by an intruder or in some cases kidnapped and murdered elsewhere. I think that is the best direction to look in (particularly the kidnapping angle, which was absolute present in the known DeAngelo crimes and could open the door wide open to investigation into dozens of cold cases), however I don't think that's the only direction that should be looked into.
I'm not much of a sleuth, but I'm curious if any of the real sleuths on this board have looked into the kinds of crimes that might not otherwise be obvious connected to DeAngelo? Burglaries gone awry. Lone people killed inside their homes or otherwise nearby in the neighborhood for seemingly no reason. I'm mostly thinking along the lines of people that interrupted his crimes and/or put him in a position where he felt they could identify him, given that he has already proven that he is ready to kill anybody at a moment's notice.
Should also look into crimes that were similar to DeAngelo's known crimes for which others were convicted on seemingly flimsy or circumstantial evidence. Look no further than Oscar Clifton, who seems to me like he was a prime candidate to get framed by DeAngelo. Who better than a killer cop to frame people for his crimes and keep himself out of suspicion?
DeAngelo has shown that he is capable of switching things up. He's also capable of disguising his crimes to make them look like they were the work of another known criminal. I have a hard time believing this guy one killed 13 people, and I have an even harder time believing that he hasn't killed anybody in the last 32 years.
