For all we have learned about DeAngelo since April 24, we still know relatively little about his movements from October, 1979 thru May, 1986. That's precisely the timeline that has always fascinated me most, I think. Mainly because of the gaps in time and the precipitous decrease in activity, relative to the (for lack of a better term) prodigious number of attacks from June, 1976 to July, 1979.Here are the exact dates and a summary (straight from Wikipedia) of all known attacks during the subject timeline.
Monday, October 1, 1979 None (attempted murder; botched attack) [Goleta]
Sunday, December 30, 1979 Robert Offerman, Debra Manning [Goleta]
Thursday, March 13, 1980 Charlene & Lyman Smith [Ventura]
Tuesday, August 19, 1980 Keith & Patrice Harrington [Dana Point]
Friday, February 6, 1981 Manuela Witthuhn [Irvine]
Monday, July 27, 1981 Cheri Domingo, Gregory Sanchez [Goleta]
Sunday, May 4, 1986 Janelle Cruz [Irvine]
Anyone that has followed this case for any amount of time has had a theory or two about what happened and why the attacks slowed. We know a few things now that are concrete facts.
- He was dismissed from Auburn, PD in July (or August) 1979 for the shoplifting incident.
- His first daughter was born in September, 1981.
- His second daughter was born in November, 1986.
Those are things we're absolutely certain about, relative to this timeline. There's a lot of speculation about where he went after his dismissal from the Auburn, PD in July (August) 1979. And that's where the mystery starts.
What else do we know with absolute certainty?
