I can't believe he walked into the police station and confessed and they didnt even believe him!? Because they were buddies? I mean...ugh.
I do believe that Kemper may be one of the few murderers that is remorseful and that sets him apart in an interesting way. I remember watching one documentary about him, and at the end one of his friends who was a cop said ED made him things from prison and sent them to him and wrote notes about being sorry.
But still, I am on the fence about whether he feels actual remorse. I feel the same way about Dahmer. I'm not so sure if he felt it, or if he pretended to for his father.
I take your point and I don't disagree with your premise. However(and you most likely know this), it is the learned ability of the sociopath, the serial killer, to mimic genuine human emotion for the purpose of manipulating their audience which allows them to become so prolific.
Some of us can identify with certain characteristics portrayed by these offenders and consequently empathize with them. I'm a quite, gentle, and intentensely introverted dude so I personally have some compassion for Dahmer, Keyes, etc... because they present some of these same characteristics. In a perverse way, I am actually empathizing with myself by proxy. As tangent, I believe we ultimately love those who find something worth loving in ourselves. "I love you because I like being the person you perceive me to be and that you love that perception of me. Kewl man..."
The truth is we have no idea who these offenders are or if they even have an evolved personality which is capable of anything other than pantomime, subterfuge, and manipulation. We see what they want us to see and that is all. To varying degrees, of course. The unsophisticated reptilian brain in all its glory.
