It actually wasn't raining during the day on the 24th; that was a mistake made by a local reporter several years after the crime (though, it's worth noting that scattered showers moved into the area overnight on the 24th, and continued into Sunday and Monday, which were both gray and cool).
And the women did return to their car after they renewed their permits on the 22nd to swap out some clothes, but that was the only visit that makes sense, given where they were on each day. They had spent the entire week backpacking with all of their gear, so while it's of course not impossible that they returned to their car on the 24th, I don't understand why they would have hiked the approximately five miles round trip that evening, particularly when the dispatcher was driving right by (and says she offered to take them).
I take your point about the fallibility of eyewitness accounts, but here's the thing: there is an entry in that nature center journal made by the volunteer that reads something like, 'had a lovely talk with a woman named Lollie, who is hiking with her friend Julie and their golden retriever.' So of course there could be more than one Lollie and Julie and dog in the park that week, it seems unlikely. One reason why staff and volunteers had such distinct memories of the duo is because Lollie was a student at Unity College, as were several of the SCA interns and volunteers that summer.
As for the pictures, there are problems dating them (according to one investigator, the date stamp on Lollie's camera was way, way off, so they had to estimate). Additional photos do, however, show them with all of their gear at other sites. They did have their full packs with them at Hawksbill.
Regarding the campsite: it was fully established when they were murdered, including the rainfly on their tent (an important detail: given the temperatures, they wouldn't have put that on until rain was imminent -- it's just too stuffy otherwise). It's also definitely true that whoever murdered them rifled through their stuff sacks and took souvenirs.
Also, Lollie's friends say she never would have tied off Taj. Never ever.
Glad to answer any additional questions or respond to other issues you may have.
