Yea, there really are. It's remarkable.
The more I think about this one, the less I see it as a possibility. DeAngelo isn't a "dad" the way a normal person is a "dad". He doesn't give a rat's arse about his daughters. They're just there, part of the adnexa of life that he has to deal with when all he really wants to do is indulge in his degenerate fantasies.
There is no way, (in my opinion), he would have killed his daughter's drug dealer because he loved his little girl and wanted revenge. Nor was afraid of the familial DNA-forensic genealogy investigative option if she was convicted. The tool wasn't even a glint in Sherlock Holmes's eye at the time. Killing this guy, as with any crime, carries the huge and monumental risk of apprehension. No way he would have exposed himself like that on behalf of another person. He's all about self preservation. He's all about himself.
So no, he didn't do this one. I suppose I have the same odds of being wrong, or being correct, as any poster here but I think we all have the same odds regarding one aspect: we'll never, ever know the answer.
EDIT. It was 1st used in 2003 in England. Then a few times in the US for investigations. It became famous in 2010 when they used it to catch the grim sleeper. So, yes, it does seem like 2005 is a bit early for him to be thinking about that. That does simmer my theory quite a bit.
It was well-publicized that authorities used Dennis Rader's daughter's DNA before the arrest - the familial match being the final piece of evidence needed to get the arrest warrant. Here's a paragraph from the Dennis Rader wikipedia article, that describes that DNA trail, after Rader's church was found to be the source of the Microsoft Word document on floppy disk BTK sent to police (where Rader was the church president, and the document's last user edit was done by "Dennis."):
------
"Police obtained a warrant to test a pap smear taken from Rader's daughter at the Kansas State University medical clinic. DNA tests showed a "familial match" between the pap smear and the sample from Wegerle's (me: 1986 BTK victim) fingernails; this indicated that the killer was closely related to Rader's daughter, and combined with the other evidence was enough for police to arrest Rader."

After learning about the Rader arrest details, I'm thinking JJD would be worried about his daughter's DNA profile being in any database, even if the exact method of familial matching within the CODIS database had not yet been used.
