The more I think of it, the more I think it is a real possibility he flew.
First of all, how in the world could he hold down a job in Auburn and travel the distances he did.
I've thought for a long time that the EAR/GSK flew because of the Davis/Modesto situation.
6/22/78 (evening) taxi driver picks up a 30 – 35 y.o. man at the Modesto airport and drops him .5 miles from #35. He drops him at the corner of Sylvan and Coffee where nobody lives, just homes under construction.
6/23/78 1:30 a.m. attack #35 on Grand Prix, Modesto
6/24/78 3:15 a.m. attack #36 on Rivendell, Davis (The Village homes, Michael Corbett, the developer found footprints between the victim's home and the U C Davis Airport)
Then the distance to Contra Costa County and San Jose not to mention Santa Barbara, Ventura and Orange County.
Santa Barbara Sheriff’s office is trying to find a connection for him to Santa Barbara. I wonder if it was simply the Goleta airport.
There is the Oxnard Airport which is close by in the neighboring town of Ventura, and the John Wayne Airport in Orange County.
I tried to find an airport near Dana Point but could only find the John Wayne Airport. However in the link below there is a listing of defunct airports in Orange County.
Planes in small airports are unlocked and easy to steal. Did he steal his relative’s planes? Did he steal planes of strangers? Was it even noticed that they had been used? If it was noticed they were stolen, perhaps he figured he wouldn’t be caught if he didn’t make the mistake of stealing the same plane again. Or did he replace the fuel? Did he own a plane that nobody knew of?
Secondly, I am remembering his own father was a flying ace in the war. His father-in-law, Clarence Huddle, was an avid pilot as well as his brother-in-law and another relative.
It isn’t necessary that he obtained a pilot’s license. My own father took flying lessons and went up in the air with me and never did get a license.
Then there is teenage Colton Harris the Barefoot Bandit from Washington state, that among other things stole light planes and flew one to the Bahamas. This kid learned to fly by reading manuals. No license!
There is Richard Russell that stole a huge airliner, did amazing acrobatics in it and then crashed it on purpose because he stole the plane to commit suicide. He learned to fly by watching video games, simulating flying.
Another thing....Chief Willick has recounted at least 3 times that I’ve heard about how he had to correct DeAngelo for invading people’s space and touching them. He had to tell DeAngelo to stop doing that and behave more professionally. Willick commented how DeAngelo pouted like a child. Willick also said that it seemed that DeAngelo looked up to him as a father figure. DeAngelo might have had father issues, his own father left and lived in Korea and had 3 more kids that he named the same names as his first 3. Very strange. Did he abandon his kids? This is making me think all the more that Clarence Huddle had a big influence on DeAngelo and that he would have wanted to fly planes like his father-in-law and the other relatives. Clarence Huddle made huge model airplanes, DeAngelo also made model airplanes.
I think flying explains how he traveled great distances while holding down a full time job and being a husband and father, apparently not being noticed.
