I respectfully disagree that its mainly democrats trying to get rid of the death penalty- maybe in California, but not where I live, which is a republican dominated state. I know some far right wingers and also main stream republicans that are adamantly opposed to the death penalty too. Where they oppose it, it seems to be on the grounds that "there's a chance that everyone/ anyone can be saved, if they just hear the word of G_d." Bah humbug, I say - a violent psychopath's hypothetical possibility of salvation is a huge hypothetical, and not my problem or concern. Serial murderers and sex criminals had their chance at so called salvation before they raped and killed. They chose the darkest path, so let them deal with it all, including the worst consequences of it. Plus, prison conversions don't fool me.
I consider myself an independent and a pragmatist, with some conservative and some progressive views. It's not that I "like" the death penalty, but I really, really dislike the idea of ever setting a violent predator free to do more damage to the rest of us who are members of civilized society. I also think some humans simply are intractable monsters, who deserve the death penalty. Maybe I'm secretly holding out hope that there's reincarnation so that the EAR/ONS, Ted Bundy's and John Wayne Gacy's of the world can get a chance to "earn salvation". By, like, starting a new existence at the bottom of the food chain as a chicken in a chicken factory, then having to work their way up through their eons worth of bad karma. * No disrespect to innocent poultry or poultry workers intended.
We will have to disagree on the death penalty I have looked into the eyes of killers and I can tell you death is the only thing that will stop some of them and life in prison still allows them access to the other inmates, Health workers and Correctional Officers and they are all in danger from them.
Cost of health insurance is surreal for the average citizen but criminals get such for free. Just read another case of a Cold Case suspect confessing because he is in ill health. What type of justice is that for the victim? Their family/friends?
