I just watched an episode of Barnaby Jones on COZI-TV named "The Eyes of Terror" that aired March 11, 1976. The similarities with the real life rapes and murders by EAR/GSK and the Barnaby Jones episode are quite uncanny. I'm not saying the episode was a road map for DeAngelo, but is it possible DeAngelo started raping his victims after he saw this episode? According to documents to the DeAngelo case, the rapes began June 18, 1976 in Rancho Cordova, 3 months after the episode had aired. Of course, EAR/GSK had already murdered Snelling and attempted to abduct his daughter in Visalia. Also there could've been many other rapes before March 1976 where the victims just didn't come forward.
Episode Premise: Women are being tied up, raped and murdered by a man wearing a hood. The killer breaks into homes without being heard. An innocent man who most likely suffers from autism is walking down the street on his way home and hears a woman scream. He breaks into the woman's window to help her, but she's already dead and the real killer escapes. The woman's husband comes home and sees the innocent man and calls police. The innocent man is arrested with little to no evidence. The actual killer never leaves evidence at any of the crimes. In a weird twist, the Sheriff becomes a suspect when Barnaby Jones finds out that the Sheriff's wife was also a victim of rape and murder years earlier. After another woman is raped and murdered, Barnaby figures out who is committing the murders and clears the Sheriff. But Barnaby's secretary Betty is about to be the next victim because she met the killer unknowingly earlier in the day. But Barnaby and the Sheriff get there in time and rescue Betty. Barnaby shoots the killer and wounds him. The killer ends up being the Deputy Sheriff (Played by General Hospital's "Luke", actor Anthony Geary) The modus operandi is different with EAR/GSK and the Barnaby Jones episode mainly because on a tv show, they don't spend time with detailed specifics since they have an hour to solve the case.
