I recently re-watched the Dark Minds episode on this case and when Spingola mention's the Winans-Williams double murder being connected to Dowski-Thomas as potential hate crimes. It got me thinking that what if they were all "Hate Crimes" in that when approaching each instance, this apparent somewhat inept killer thought he had pulled over or was approaching two females. When I look at the photos of the victims, I focus on the males and in the dark and with their longer scruffy hair, did he mistake them for women it wasn't until he got close that he realized it was a man? I realize this may sound out of left field and stupid but as I continued to think about this, it may explain why the shootings occurred rather than the use of a knife and rope. He realized he made a mistake and looked to get off the scene as quickly as possible after potentially being seen and if he let them go they would eventually identify him if they went to Law Enforcement. Whether that be a composite sketch or the fact he was Law Enforcement himself.
Then I watched "Serial Killers on the Loose" to see if I could get anything else on this case and I realized they mentioned that the Phelps-Lauer case showed signs of a knife being the murder weapon. But when their bodies were found I thought perhaps he realized that having them isolated, he could take his time. Maybe his frustration in his own stupidity had boiled over to the point he took out his rage on both the. I know this may sound stupid or out of left field but just a thought that has been on my mind lately and wondering what everyone else thinks. Personally, I disagree when Spingola says these cases aren't related but I feel like his idea of a hate crime may have some merit.
