the [DNA] matches from the different crime scenes leave no doubt same man in Sacramento and in Ventura, Goleta and Orange County.
Dan, that's not quite correct.
The DNA matches are for Ventura, Goleta, Orange County, and ... Contra Costa County. There have been no DNA matches that connect the Original Night Stalker to rapes committed in Sacramento County, to my knowledge.
Investigators, and posters, make the assumption that the East Area Rapist is the person who committed the rapes in Contra Costa County, and therefore the EAR must be the ONS.
These assumptions are based on what investigators in Sacramento concluded, in their original investigation of the East Area Rapist.
These assumptions have been carried down through the decades as factual. They "likely" are correct. But without any DNA samples from Sac, we cannot state, factually and without doubt, that the EAR committed the Contra Costa rapes. Again, to my knowledge, there are no known DNA connections between the Sacramento rapes and the murders in Southern California.
The only DNA connections to the Original Night Stalker are the three DNA samples from rapes in Danville (twice) and San Ramon (once), both towns located in Contra Costa County, a different jurisdiction from Sacramento County.
Your statement that "... leave no doubt ..." brings me back to one of my main problems with this case ... We inappropriately take assumptions as fact.
So when I read that someone "has no doubt" or that such-n'-such "leaves no doubt", or shouts out a really confident statement, I cringe.
There's plenty to ... doubt ... in this case.
Speaking to the board as a whole (not to Dan in particular) ... let's not be overly confident that what we think we know is factual. A great deal of what we "know" is nothing more than assumptions handed down from the original investigation ... assumptions, many of which are never questioned. They are never questioned by current LE, never questioned by the media, never questioned by a lot of posters here.
