I have been following the EAR ONS details since 2010, so I know the case fairly well. I have read both ST and HP, etc. In all likelihood, the EAR/ONS is alive and
well and will never be caught barring a major DNA slip, or a long shot match on
CODIS at this point. (I’m sure people
here will disagree, but that’s the reality in my opinion).
I personally think the space between 1981-1986 was life changes, with a slip in
1986 which was disappointing and he quit.
Now he lives among us, a neighbor, a co-worker, a friend, etc. Scary.
But if he didn’t stop, or if he took another pause after 1986, I picture an older,
less agile, and more opportunistic predator.
I have also been following the LISK case (Long Island Serial Killer) for the last
couple years. They have found a number
of bodies on Long Island (all prostitutes, and of course this MO is not in line
with 70’s-80’s EAR ONS). The LISK is a
likely a sexual sadist, at least that’s how the FBI profile reads.
One thing that stood out about this case was an unusual, chilling fact. After LISK killed one of his victims, he
started calling her younger sister and taunting her. This is highly sadistic, of course, and rare
to call a victims’ family. LISK used a
disposable phone and called mostly from busy Manhattan to avoid video
detection. He was definitely organized.
When you think about scary, spine tingling movie moments, you must admit that both LISK
and EAR ONS have some unique similarities (Gonna Kill You).
The sister said the man had no accent (east coast/Long Island), and
sounded older.
Is Ray There? Who knows.
But if you really want to run off and consider a scenario without any real factual data, this could have been
the road EAR/ONS took. A professional
who moved to upscale coastal Long Island, and well aware of DNA by the 90’s,
starting preying on the most vulnerable of victims in his middle age, storing and
thus removing any traceable DNA matter.
From
the Village Voice:
“But the most
movie-ready moment, and also the most awful, in the story comes in a longer
account of a previously recounted detail -- the killer called the younger
sister of the murdered Melissa Barthelemy:
Seven days after Melissa disappeared, the phone rang at Lynn's home in Buffalo. The
caller I.D. displayed the number of Melissa's missing cell. Amanda picked up.
The voice was self-assured. "Is this Melissa's little sister?" he asked.
"I hear you're a half-breed." Amanda's father is black. Whoever was
calling knew what Amanda looked like.
There were seven calls in all. Once, the caller seemed to toy with Amanda, asking if she knew
what Melissa did for a living. Another time, he said, "Are you gonna be a
whore like your sister?" Police traced some of the calls to Midtown
Manhattan and another to Massapequa. In the last call, in August 2009, he told
Amanda outright that he had killed Melissa.
The other family members are obviously curious about the details of the call, though Amanda is
reticent to give away too much. "He was calm, in control," Amanda
says. "He knew what he was doing."
