(Whew..) Okay, here we go... this is my first official theory on who the Golden State Killer might have been during the EAR part of his saga. I've compiled it with some work I'd procured from various sites, so some info may be off or left out. However, I feel that I'm at least heading in the right direction and with what I've already learned since exploring this amazing board, I'm sure that I will be changing it up and adding to it over time. I'm open to criticism and response, so please don't hold back. Thanks!
AN AMATUER PROFILE OF THE EAR BY WES W.:
The East Area Rapist and Original Night Stalker are in fact one in the same. However, due to the high volume of home invasions, rapes and serial murders around that time in that part of the country, several of the crimes committed may be attributed to several offenders. Following the modus operandi between each crime is the key to linking all of them, along with the recent DNA discoveries. However, seeing as how much of the information is still being withheld by law enforcement, theories are only as good as the person who comes up with them(and as far as EAR/ONS being the VR, it might make sense, but it's simply too far of a loose ended connection).
I suspect that he was involved with construction, repair work or plumbing, but only as odd-jobs to reach ends meet. However, I suspect he was involved with the film industry to some extent as well, likely an extra hand used by a crew for pay. Finally, it's not crazy to think that he may have been an underachieving infantryman, or has at least had a turn in the military. His above-novice marksmanship shows that he does have proficiency with a firearm.
Regardless of understanding the killer's motives during his crimes, it is important to paint a valid picture of the offender. In my opinion, starting from the bare beginnings is a way to profile the suspect in a way that is fair, yet realistic way.
On that note, I believe that the Golden State Killer himself was a young man that was raised in barbaric circumstances, though money may have not been the actual issue. He was likely relocated at some point as a child and raised by a relative or parent in California. From there, he probably did not finish high-school but did what was required of him by his authority figure.
The individual in question was possibly involved with drugs early on in life, leading to a desperate career in home invasions and robbery. However, he may have simply been an underachieving slacker who was afraid of doing real work. While the crimes started out as petty theft for monetary gain, the offender gained confidence in his continued actions.
In real life, he was harmless and weak, while as a criminal he flourished mentally and emotionally. He appeared to be normal and even kind hearted, or even interesting to some of the delinquents that knew him best... but he was never any more or any less than average. He would have the tendency to over-compensate for his short-comings, including a big vehicle if accessible, big guns, sporty clothes and a list of other things attributed to this.
After some time, the drug or monetary factors wore off, depending on how he was involved with it(personally, I believe he tried his hand at dealing but got into trouble financially). He'd grown comfortable in achieving his new high, which would soon escalate to stalking, rape and ultimately murder. He found comfort in the locations he would scout out, middle to upper-middle class homes owned by women who lived alone, or had a husband that worked nights. Those around him would see this new individual begin to grow, but they would never question it at all.
I believe that the Golden State Killer was younger than twenty-one years old and older than sixteen when he started out as EAR, placing him around his mid to late fifties today. Say that the EAR/ONS was seventeen years old in 1977... he would be fifty-three years old today. If he were as old as thirty-six at the time of the RC-CH crimes, he would be around seventy today. Needless to say, chances are in the favor of this individual being alive. A coward like him would attempt extending his life as long as humanly possible, though the possibility of imprisonment would undoubtedly lead him to suicide.
It is unlikely that he is in prison, as his DNA would have crossed references somewhere. However, mistakes happen in DNA labs everyday and he might be in prison but has been extremely fortunate. This leads a sleuth to believe that he is either dead, or living a relatively normal life now. The reason that he has stopped, I contribute to his fear of being in caught with DNA coming along so well or he may have very well found himself a new life to keep him relatively busy in his later years.
If the East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker is in fact deceased, records exist of his life. Looking into the MO of the EAR/ONS will be pivotal here, including interviews with surviving victims, police reports and other evidence. Law enforcement is likely tracking these kind of leads down by this point, so it may be even more likely that the individual is either still alive and free, or incarcerated and extremely lucky.
If the individual is alive and incarcerated, he has surpassed DNA confirmations of his identity as the The Golden State Killer. As I stated above, these kinds of mistakes are made in DNA databases all of the time and they are never anyone persons fault. However, if he is in fact incarcerated it is because of a similar charge to the EAR/ONS tags, yet to a much smaller degree. This includes anything from indecent liberties with a minor or even petty burglary.
Now supposing that the EAR/ONS is still alive and still a free man, he is living amongst us in private. A socially awkward individual, he would use his age to comfortably engage in social activity if he had to. This includes being an alcoholic, rudeness in public or even perverted to some degree.
To find the individual known as The Golden State Killer, whether he is dead or alive, would take some effort. The right individuals would have to oversee these methods, but I feel it would be entirely worth the time and effort. First, law enforcement must continue their cross referencing of DNA databases from out of state. Most likely, there is a stone that has been left unturned and the suspect has moved away from CA. It is my firm belief, that he is in fact in the system for a crime similar to that of The Golden State killer, but it hasn't been checked.
DNA is the key in finding the culprit responsible for taking the lives of thirteen innocent people, as well as the innocence of up to fifty women and girls. Also, records of films being made around the time should be investigated, as I believe that the individual worked as a set designer, or possibly even painting cars. He may very well have worked on a Grip crew for a film, though as a lowly subordinate to someone contracting.
Thank you.

8/27/14 UPDATE!! The following is my updated profile and is more direct than the last. If anyone catches up on this, I hope it provides a better read and just know that it is still always changing
The East Area Rapist and Original Night Stalker are in fact the same person. However, due to the high volume of home invasions, rapes and serial murders around that time in that part of the country, several of the crimes committed may be attributed to several offenders. Following the perpetrators' method of operation between each crime is the key to linking all of them along with DNA discoveries. However, seeing how much of the information is still being withheld by law enforcement, theories are only as good as the person who comes up with them(and as far as EAR/ONS being the VR, it might make sense, but it's simply too far of a loose ended connection).
On that note, I believe that the individual was raised in barbaric circumstances, though money may was not the actual issue. This is not to say that he was rich or that he was poor, but it is in my opinion the money was not the root of his problems.
Personally, I think he was highly neglected and left to his own device most of the time during his youth. Likely because of this, he lost his virginity or began exploring his sexuality at a very young age, as early as nine or ten. He was likely relocated as a child and raised by a relative or parent in California. From there, he probably did not finish high-school but did what was required of him by his authority figure.
The individual was involved with drugs, gangs or some kind of illegal activity as teenager, feeling inadequate and desiring, if not lusting, for more attention. He was probably into stealing or buying big vehicles, big guns, big toys, big challenges... all in the hope of fulfilling his inadequacies. I firmly believe that he has always been one to overcompensate for his shortcomings. Personally, I feel that it may have not been as much as the size as it was something else, likely erectile dysfunction or sexual frustration.
If he graduated high school, he did it by the skin of his teeth and at the behest of a domineering authority figure. Once this figure got off of his back for whatever reason, whether because of neglect or doing something right, his bad habits took hold and he simply continued going crazy. He continued giving into his primal urges and desires. I believe if he did have a drug habit, it was not a primary factor in his later offenses.
He started off stealing, vandalizing and abusing others. He would later become introverted, finding a powerful interest in voyeurism. Finally, he became completely reclusive and would desire only the company of those he WANTED, but could not ever be with. Likely, he was a voyeur to his early rape victims for some time. Anyone else who would be involved with him would be either someone he wanted to impress or someone that he could control.
During his initial rapes, he was simply after the female that he had stalked. He sought to control his victims emotions and actions, dominating them. He wanted these early women badly but felt too inadequate in real life. I do not believe his first victims were totally thought out, but he went in full blast regardless. Finally able to act out on his selfish, lustful desires, the EAR was born and he would slowly give into his dark, introverted desires. Despite this, it didn't mean that he wasn't careful as he fears persecution.
He was not from Sacramento in my opinion... not during the time of the rapes. He might have once lived there and moved, but he didn't risk detection by acting out in a community he lived in. He frequented the area and possibly had a job there, something contracting like construction or carpentry. I have a theory that he worked in the film industry, or was at least involved with making commercials.
This brings us to a major point, which I will once again say is complete speculation. I am open to the criticism that will follow and I am very much open to other opinions. I believe that the suspect was a gun nut, who often fantasized about being a police officer, or soldier, who could get what he wanted easier. This comes not only from the suspects psyche, but his proficiency with firearms. Every time you hear about this guy being chased outside of the home or outside shootings, someone is always hit and it's never him. This isn't to say he is military or LE, I firmly do not believe that that is the case... though I feel he'd tried enlisting at some point but didn't make the cut.
I do not believe that the EAR was involved with the Maggiore killings. Though he might have been operating out of that area, I firmly believe this was a premeditated murder committed by another individual. However, I'm not ruling out that the EAR was not in or around the area at that time.
Once his rapes became big news, he was initially overwhelmed but came to relish in the attention. However, it would only come second to his true motivations, which was to control his victims. He would crank call victims, both potential and future, taunting and threatening them. Finally, he began to contact the police and would "get off" on the lack of action against him. Whenever someone would try to stand up to him, he would go out of his way to knock them down.
Not unlike the Zodiac, his taunts would reach specific highs and lows. NOT like Zodiac, his taunts were specific and personal, meant for those he effected directly. The Zodiac was out to be a twisted critic of sorts, who was much more methodical than the EAR was chaotic.
The first murder he ever committed against a human being was likely an accident... but he grew to like it. This will not have been the first time he has killed however, as it came easily. It was the next best thing and he simply became comfortable with it. Once he'd become used to it, he began executing and eventually, he topped himself. This likely lead to him becoming even more introverted, to the point that he began making more mistakes.
On a final note, he is now a dead man. He may have feared being caught, paranoia allowing him to feel as though law enforcement was closing in on him. Though I feel he is not suicidal, I don't think he'd kill himself unless he felt cornered.
I like to think he did the wrong thing to the wrong person, who likely killed him and disposed of the body. I doubt this person either knew of his true exploits or who he was, but the EAR/ONS messed up and ended his own legacy without so much as leaving a hint.
However, he very well could have been arrested and is incarcerated, his "luck" continuing as he slips under the radar because of being a single number out of a million others. Though our technology in DNA has surpassed expectations of the 1980's, mistakes for the lowly offenders are still made.
Also, he could be alive and well, as a sociopath of his degree would more than likely fear death and do whatever he could to prolong it. As I said above, the thought of suicide would only cross his mind if he feared imminent capture but I feel he would revolt rather than retract. This means, I don't believe that the suspect would kill himself immediately, but he would take someone else out with him. When cornered, this suspect becomes a caged animal.
Like the B.T.K. serial killer Dennis Rader, he could very well be adapted into society, allowing for his urges to come and go at will. I doubt this though, due to the sheer chaotic nature of his crimes. Personally, I feel he would be more like Dahmer, though his confirmed victims were less high-risk in personal nature.
Thanks for allowing me to present this updated profile. More and more changes daily and I hope to present one that I feel people will mostly agree with.
