Hi burglarized most of the homes prior to the rapes.  Looking at his calling patterns after the attacks, his post crime surveillance of victims was a thorough as the prior.

  He also seemed to have a zig zag pattern.  Even the night of the Offerman/Manning murders, He zig zagged across Cathedral Oaks Road 3 burglaries below Cathedral Oaks and 2 above Cathedral Oaks and then the murders of O/M right on the corner of Cathedral Oaks and Ave. Pequena.  He zig zagged across the American River, he kept returning to the same neighborhoods in Sacramento, Goleta and Irvine.  It seems to be a pattern. 

The other thing to point out is when he dropped the twine from O/M's condo up Kellogg Ave and turned left on Queen Ann,  he passed right next to the home of H/H, the victim's that escaped.  I've often wondered it that was intended to freak them out.  I wonder if he was considering attacking them again?  (I kind of doubt that, as he was too smart and probably figured they would be on high alert and possibly armed to the teeth, but still, he was such a weirdo I do wonder.)

These neighborhoods should have been on high alert and a hot bed of police activity (I would imagine) yet amazingly he kept returning as you have pointed out above, and what is even more amazing is that he didn't get caught!

It is discussed in the Cason series and in ETHS Investigates.  There was a burglary the night before the Smith murders at the church across the street as well.

conducting the standard procedural neighborhood canvas police began to learn of a prowler who had been reported in the vicinity of the Smith home in the days before and after the homicide from multiple sources. A neighbor reported hearing a suspect in their backyard while another reported having a window screen in their infant sons bedroom and was also missing. The neighbor reported an attempted burglary to the Ventura police after waking to their crying infant in the late hours of the night.



One could only conclude that if they had not woken to their babies cries, the neighbor and his wife may have also fallen victim to the same man responsible for the Smith’s murder. His wife went to check and settle their child at approximately 3:00 AM after hearing a noise coming from his bedroom. But as she reached the room there was no sign of an intruder. When checking the perimeter of their property a few days later the husband discovered the missing screen.

I would also like to point out that this is also mentioned in Larry Crompton's book "Sudden Terror".  pg. 441 - 442, paper back version.  Two things that really bug me and seem to be a theme repeated over and over in this EAR/ONS/GSK case  is how people didn't call the police.
 
1) At 2:00 a.m. March 13, 1980, a neighbor was awakened by screams.  The screams came from near the Smith residence.  He went back to sleep.  (He hears screams and DOESN'T CALL the police!)

2)  On Sunday March 8th (5 days before the murders) a High Point resident heard someone prowling in her back yard.  The prowler jiggled the bathroom window and moved it a couple of times.  The resident DID NOT NOTIFY the police!

3)  March 17 or 18 (4 to 5 days AFTER THE MURDERS!!!!) midnight to 3am, the infant woke up crying, resident heard something in the infant's bedroom.  Two to three days after their break-in they found the screen had been removed and was missing (missing?)  AND  a 1 1/2 INCH DIAMETER HOLE was in the glass near the latch.  HE REPORTED IT 7 DAYS LATER!!! 

O.K. THIS HAS TO INDICATE HE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE MURDERS, RIGHT?  How could the neighbors NOT KNOW about the murders???  Is this another case of the police keeping it hush hush?? and IF THEY KNEW about the murders they didn't mention it for a week later???  Wouldn't you notify the police of a break in even it there had been no murders, but there had been a double murder and they wait a week to notify the police???  COME ON!!! 

I don't get any of it, the not reporting to the police AND THE BRAZENNESS  of GSK coming back to the scene of a double murder AND NOT GETTING CAUGHT.

I am absolutely astounded at it all in case you can't tell.

Sandia- When I study the Goleta maps and walk the crime scenes, I am always drawn to the  end of the cul de sac at Norma Way.  The zig zag is interesting- another standard military routine.

Port, Thanks so much for pointing out the zig zag pattern being standard military routine.  I guess I can remember seeing soldiers doing that (I think) but had never considered it.  Very, very interesting.  So, I'm assuming that you consider that an indication he had been in the military?  That's what it indicates to me along with the ability to handle guns and the ability to control people and his erect bearing.

 Considering that he stole a bike and approached from the opposite direction from, and as well as fled away from the cul de sac portion of Norma Way, why do you find your self drawn there?  Just instinct? or what do you notice about it?

I find this interesting because, in at least one case, a man reported a man sitting in a car taking notes in the vicinity of a victim's house and on at least two occasions, GSK left pens behind - at either his surveillance point or in the victim's home. I would suggest that this is a very organized approach to plan attacks and lends credence to the authenticity of witness comps."

Portofleith - I am amazed to read of the WMA standing in the back yard taking notes in a spiral notebook! I figured he must have taken notes in order to execute such well organized attacks. Also, I have wondered if, like the South Side Rapist - Dennis Rabbitt, he would go on "scouting missions" where he would collect information on multiple targets/homes. I don't believe that Dennis Rabbitt was as organized; I think he would just mentally note information on multiple targets because he lived right in the area where he was committing rapes. He was very familiar with the area already. EAR may have been, but I believe EAR did not live in the areas of the rapes. Therefore, he would have to take detailed notes.

If he is apprehended, I wonder if LE will find a stash of old spiral notebooks filled with reconnaissance information on his victims. I think this helps explain why he continued to make obscene phone calls to his victims years later - he kept their names and contact information in these notebooks. Although, if the victim married and moved, the only way I can think of that he would be able to contact them is if he was still stalking them.

The most complex, full of clues, possibilities, red herring case imaginable.  Mind boggling!  I have been most recently interested in the construction/painting angle as well as the Cordova Gardens Elementary school situation.  Port just pointed out the zig zagging which made me think of so many connections to the military.  I also suspect there is a small time drug dealing angle, now you, slumbergirl, mentioned how he would call people from years before and probably kept their numbers in the notebooks.  That got me thinking about a whole bunch of things connected to the phone calls.  The walking on the roof was it to cut the phone line or to tap into it?, there was evidence that he had tapped into phones lines (did he work for the telephone company? or could this phone tapping originate from the military? did he find out how from working at a Radio Shack type of store?), anyway the big thing that immediately came to mind is the Eva Taylor case, (which is controvercial as to whether it is connected or not.)  Eva Taylor's daughter told me she received many many hand up phone calls over the years.  They had been moving a lot, buying and selling homes and the phone calls continued for years to all the different homes they lived in and her husband got hang up phone calls at his work too. So now I'm wondering if he kept the phone numbers in the notebooks, but if people moved the note books wouldn't help, so could there be a phone company connection?  Something to consider but actually I kiind of doubt it.  I'm thinking as I type so I looping back in a circle and back to your notebook theory as being the most likely.  Oh my goodness, what a case!

In relation to his finding phone numbers years after people moved or changed their numbers, I think it may be a combo of having phone line equipment available and knowing how to use it and also medical records/access to the private info available on patients who updated their phone and location info on their medical records.

In reading of EAR's ability to locate previous victims that had moved, I've considered the possibility of his having access to a database in some form or fashion.

Step 1. Neighbors call the cops because a stranger was in the backyard of an attractive young woman taking notes.

Step 2. Police collate any similar reports from prior rapes, establish an average time between surveillance and attack.

Step 3. Police stake out house round time of expected attack.

Step 4. EAR acquires 6 nice new navels and a couple of new holes in head.

Step 5. Police enter stage left to massive applause. EAR crime wave over.

I sure hope something like this happened in Sacramento (minus the navels and head vents) because when a young and very pretty friend of ours in Stockton found that her house had been prowled she had a police officer in her house every night for about 6 weeks.

That's a good point. The note taking suggests someone who did not live in the neighborhood.

For a long time now I have suggested there is a telephone company connection.  And in one thread on the board, albion showed how it would be easy for a telephone techie to "hotwire" connections in such a way as to listen in on peoples' lines.  And of course the guy could have been trained in telephone (or more broadly communication device) operation and repair while in the military.

When you say "database", I immediately think of the internet, which was not in operation in the EAR/ONS days.  So what kind of "database" did you have in mind?

I used the term database in "some form or fashion" to include any method conceivable at the time. Whether it be access to medical records as PC alluded to, or within other services/utilities wherein a change of address would be required.

Wouldn't even really take a phone techie. The seed money for Apple computer came from selling "Blue Boxes" to UC Berkeley students so they could defraud the phone companies.
