I guarantee he knows about EAR. He's a true crime fanatic and a California native. What's most interesting about Killer on the Road is how auto-biographical much of the beginning is. Ellroy is a brilliant writer but an extremely troubled man.
I'm guessing you are probably right. The only thing that makes me wonder is because of an interview he gave a while back. Ellroy doesn't like being influenced by the outside world for fear that it will hurt his writing. Therefore, he lives in an apartment with no television and no internet. Which is surprising because you would think he would at least like to watch all those film noirs he loves that are available on dvd.
This begs another question that I was wondering. In the midwest, I can confidently say that about 90% of the population has no idea who the EAR is or anything about the case. Even that percentage may be too low. I'm guessing Canada is similar? For the posters that live in California- Is the EAR case widely known by everyone in the state?
I'd assume with the lack of publicity and general disgust and disinterest shown for rapists who got away via the general public, I doubt it's chatted up much among anyone who missed the Bee articles, but I could very well be wrong. People are more concerned with Casey Anthony, the Trayvon case, and Nancy Grace than a cold case from decades ago from what i've gathered.
