As I have mentioned before, the Santa Barbara News-Press underreported crime news in the time EAR-ONS was active. The other day I found crime reports from the Goleta Valley News, which shed more light onto what he may have been up to.
In the fall/winter of 1979, it has been surmised that EAR-ONS lived in Goleta/Santa Barbara, possibly attending UC Santa Barbara or working on a construction job. We know he committed two crimes in late 1979 — the botched attack on Queen Ann Lane Oct. 1 and the murder of Offerman and Manning on Dec. 30.
In addition, Goleta Valley News reported Sept. 5, 1979: “A 21-year-old Berkeley Rd. woman reported that as she was getting ready to go to bed she noticed a man watching her through the window.” Berkeley Road is across San Jose Creek, not far from the Offerman/Manning and Queen Ann crime scenes, and even closer to the Domingo/Sanchez location. In fact, Berkeley Road is also close to the home of Eva Davidson Taylor, who was bludgeoned in her Goleta home April 18, 1974.
The newspaper reported Aug. 28, 1979, that a man tried to rape a 20-year-old UCSB student in a remote beach area north of More Mesa near Patterson Avenue. The victim, wearing a swimsuit while sunbathing in a secluded area, reported that her attacker was “wearing only a stocking mask” when he jumped on her. The woman also said that the attacker “attempted, but was unable to rape her.” This attack also could have been committed by EAR-ONS. Granted the MO is different from what we know of his prior activity. However, the ski mask and the apparent inability to complete the rape sound familiar. Also, the area of the crime is a straight 2-mile drive/bike ride north to the area of his other crimes.
If I find anything else, I will post it on this thread. If anyone else has reports of prowlings in late 1979 please post here.
