"Lepke, The idea of someone in the park just smoking on a bench is intriguing to me, because EAR left an abundance of cigarette butts at Sacramento crime scenes, usually outside the homes at surveillance points. In one case, the victim noticed a different brand cigarette butt in her ashtray a week before her attack, as if he had sat in her living room long before the crime occurred. Many people smoked then. In my circle of friends I was one of only two that did not smoke ... I am struck by the kind of patience it would take to watch a house for days, and then smoke on the ground for hours waiting for 3:00 am- much like a skilled deer hunter."

We know that EAR could run, and run fast. As a runner myself I do not smoke. No runner I know smokes. And smokers don't run.
It's not a matter of culture, conformity, or any other social characteristic. It's a matter of physiology. Has to do with lung capacity. Smokers do not run. And runners do not smoke. We cannot write off this inverse correlation, regardless of so-called "evidence" found at this or that crime scene.
Most posters are not going to agree with me. But again, it's not a matter of belief or opinion. It's a matter of ... physiological response.
Maybe the guy planted cigarettes to throw off the cops. But regardless of any evidence of cigarettes ...
I still maintain that EAR ... did ... not ... smoke! It's not physiologically possible to be a fast runner as EAR was and still smoke.
