Negative, negative, negative! I welcome the book, hope that there will be some piece of information that someone will recognize, or trigger a new line of thought, or whatever. Why be so rude to this author? I would hope the author would come on this board and field questions and clear up some misconceptions we may have. Why would he want to with this kind of reception before the book has even been read. Sheesh!

If this book is written by who I think it is, it shows that HE CARES! He still is interested in the case unlike others. I really appreciate that. How about a word of appreciation, of encouragement.

It is not easy to catch a serial killer. He moved to different jurisdictions. Serial killers are very hard to catch if they kill people they have absolutely no connection to. Unless you get a license plate number, or catch him fleeing the scene, or get a DNA hit, how do you catch him? It's easy for arm chair types to criticize. I'm not saying criticism is not in order on certain aspects of the case and for certain people such as that police chief that told Detective Crompton to get out, but why jump down this guys throat? The jerk that wanted Crompton to destroy his files. What a bureaucrat. No concern for catching a criminal, need to go by the book.

I think the author might point out flaws in the system, such as not being allowed to follow certain paths, or non cooperation between agencies, things like that. I don't know that, I am guessing. This sort of thing needs to be brought to the public's attention. Because that is something that undoubtedly costs people their lives.

I've learned that the credits seem to be the most telling part of the books.

For goodwill, I'll buy a bunch of copies if a suspect is arrested and charged in the ONS murders before the book comes out.

O.K. I was salivating by the mention of "cookies" but on reading again, "before the book comes out?"  No cookies for me I fear.

Just my opinion, but Sandia, if there is corruption in the case and that's the cause of why the case isn't solved, then it doesn't matter much how hard it is to catch a serial killer. I think Crompton did a decent job of describing some other LE lying and doing more harm than good to the case.

It should be about bringing justice for the victims and preventing further crimes by these serials, but apparently it's not.

Why would I do that?  First of all I don't know him, and second of all I would never tell him to do that.  He should be able to make money from writing a book just like any other author does.  So now, not only are you against law enforcement, you are against the free enterprise system.

I always want to be fair.  I don't want to accuse anyone of something without proof.  I am not a fan of all law enforcement.  I feel there is a lot of criticism that can be leveled at men who want to grandstand and solve the case and not cooperate with other agencies.  Or if there is corruption, I want the creeps thrown in jail like the criminals they are.  But this author is trying to write a book about the case.  Hopefully some new information will come out and it seems like he has hinted and from some things I have heard in general that he does have an ax to grind with LE himself.  I just want him to have a good reception, and I just really want him to help us by sharing his knowledge with us, his opinions, answer questions.  I need to start writing down some things that I'd like to answer.  I have had so many questions in the past and right now, I can't think of one.  I hope hope hope we will have the opportunity to clear some things up.

I have an idea. Instead of books, the retired LE doing them can give copies of all of their records to the victims and/or the families of the murder victims and let them get their own investigations done. That would probably be much more effective.

The way dengas let's out little parts of the book, trying to excite people makes me want to puke. Reminds me of a trailer for a b movie.

PC, I agree partly with you.  They can't give out all private information to the world.  The next door neighbor shoplifted when he was a teen.  The woman across the street is a "fill in the blanks"?  The teenager down the block is a disciplinary problem.  Witness names and addresses.  You cannot ruin people that are looked at as poi's.  There are so many poi's and so far they have all been innocent. 

There also has to be some information held back that only the killer would know.  That way they can eliminate nuts that do false confessions, prisoner's that want to trade information to rat out a cellmate for a reduced sentence, jail house snitches are very unreliable.  Or if they bring someone in for questioning and he says something only the killer would know.

 BUT....I agree, it would be great to release more, perhaps redacted copies?

There could be information in there that could mean something to someone.  That is how I found out about A.S. and the ligatures leading from the vacant condo next to O/M where he "usually" played Dungeons and Dragons up to his lawn on Queen Ann and thereby feeding my framing theory.

Didn't someone recently post that Shelby and Oase have been brought back to work on the case with the Sac Sheriff's Dept? If that's true, how does that work for a current investigator on the case to release a book about the case?

If for example the book author does a book tour, the talk show circuit and some personal appearances and somebody who knows (consciously) nothing about this case gets their memory jogged and makes that phone call with that one little bit of information that reveals EARONSGSK's identity then we'll all be happy.

That's what I've been hoping every time something new surfaces. And I'm selfish, I'm not getting any younger. I don't want to arrive at the big checkout counter in the sky without knowing that this creep has been brought to justice.

I would like to add my unwanted two cents here:

1) A retired investigator doesn't dedicate a major portion of his well-earned retirement time to catching "the one that got away" for profit - he/she does it because they truly want to see this perp behind bars. The author had every right to walk away from this case, yet chose to still give time and effort to solve it. The author should be applauded, not ridiculed.

2) This author clearly has not solved the case. If that makes him/her a failure, then every LE who touched this case a failure too. And every amatuer slueth who looked at this case is a failure. I don't believe that every investigator in every jurisdiction involved with the search is a failure - I just cannot make myself that cynical.

3) Any one who thinks that this author did this for money hasn't been involved in the publishing industry. Established authors with a huge following get large advances and royalties. Unknown authors are lucky to get an advance and even luckier to see any royalties. If the author wanted to get rich, he/she has a better chance playing the lotto.

To me, blaming Shelby might be akin to blaming an FBI agent for writing a book on DB Cooper. There were mistakes made, poor communication, egos, etc., etc. in this case. However, I would surely hope people involved with the crimes would want to disseminate information whether the public blames them, they blame themselves or there's no blame at all. I think this case was "career-defining" for quite a number of people so I think the books are actually very late in coming if you ask me...independent if you want to blame LE or whomever.

Personally, I'd find it much easier to reserve comment about publishing "pay days" concerning books about this case ( Larry Crompton's was self-published after all ) than I would something from Oprah or a pandering politician...who likely have considerably bigger royalty deals. It would be a crime in my estimation if this book made no money and the new Zodiac book by Gary Stewart ( which is pure garbage ) let's him retire with considerable new wealth based on what the publisher and media machine can do for him.
