I really doubt there was corruption. You're simply dealing with a criminal that was far more careful and didn't make the mistakes that most do. The police are mainly lucky when catching criminals. Lets face it they didn't go into le because they have the chance to be rocket scientists. They tend to be average people who are a little arrogant. I can't see any reason they would want to protect or ignore things that could catch him. I don't think he'll ever be caught. He was a monster and unfortunately did the right things to ensure he wouldn't be captured. If they couldn't catch him during his crime spree they won't now.

They are all valid points and I'm not saying there was definately corruption in this case.

I just think it's a reasonable possibility... I don't expect everyone to agree.

If certain corrupt individuals would let a person skate on the VR crimes, then what purpose would it serve them to let him continue committing 50+ rapes and then ten murders? They would risk the chance of him being caught and ratting on them. If they were that powerful, arrangements would have been made for someone to put a bullet in his dome, way before it got to the point of him beating people to death.

Maybe he knew that he had the connections to beat a rape charge (serial rapists were being paroled after a year or two in the 70s so - shocking as it may seem by today's standards - it wasn't seen as a particularly serious crime by many in authority).

Maybe he also knew that they wouldn't cover him if he was beating people to death, and maybe that's why he was so careful not to link the ONS crimes to the EAR ones.

Um. That's a gigantic straw man. I don't think I've ever met anyone who denies that corruption exists as a concept. What people are saying is that there's no compelling evidence that it is a significant factor in this specific case. There have been many attempts to invoke corruption and coverups to explain various things, and many posters (myself included) don't accept that the available evidence justifies such an interpretation. If you want to read into this position that we're uncritically accepting everything the authorities say and that we categorically deny the existence of corruption, go ahead. Just bear in mind that those are your preconceptions, and that they have just about nothing to do with the actual opinions of those you're supposedly arguing against.

Is it really so hard to accept that we have honest and reasoned disagreements on the facts, without resorting to gross caricatures like that?

He had properties all over the UK, wore disguises such as wigs to travel incognito and prowled around in campervans and nondiscript cars when up to no good - he only drove his Mercs and Rollers when on 'public business'.

As horrific as his crimes were, Savile was a different animal. Visiting poor children under the guise of being a friendly celebrity, is much different then breaking into the homes of strangers and running the risk of being shot and killed. If EAR had money he would have just went to some poor country and paid people to reenact his sick fantasies. Unfortunately, in some of those countries he could probably have paid for people for him to kill.

Savile was a corrupt, wealthy individual. He wasn't an underling or thug with connections.
