Shelby's "Carlos" - any additional info?

Hello there -

I just finished Shelby's "Hunting a Psychopath" and he ends the book on a rather curious note, devoting a few pages to a German/Brazilian man named "Carlos" whose ex-wife claims that Carlos and a friend were responsible for the EAR and ONS attacks. Shelby implies that Carlos was in the right time and the right place (according to his ex-wife's account) to have committed the crimes, and that Carlos was acting nervously around the time of the Sacramento rapes. His explanation was that he thought EAR was trying to "frame" him.

It's not mentioned when Carlos and his wife divorced; it's not mentioned why she took so much time to report her misgivings to LE; it's not mentioned if LE has ruled Carlos out because of a DNA mismatch. The last info on Carlos in "Hunting a Psychopath" is that Carlos "now" lives on  a boat off the coast of Santa Barbara ("now" is in quotes because it's not clear if "now" means 2014 or "now" means 1993, when it seems like Shelby was investigating this subject. Or was it 1993 when the ex-wife's tip comes in? Shelby's not too clear on any of this, and the way he writes (damn, this book needed a MUCH better editor!) obfuscates details which, after re-reading those pages a few times, loom larger in the reader's mind.


So my questions are: Who's "Carlos?" Does anyone have any information about him that isn't in "Hunting a Psychopath?" Has LE cleared him? Is he still considered a suspect? Shelby seems to think Carlos is a good enough suspect that he should devote several pages in his book to him. Since reading about the EAR/ONS for several years, I've never heard of this particular suspect; either this is due to me not being sharp-eyed enough or me being bad at memorizing data, but that book's ending threw me for a loop and I just wondered what other info we might have on this "Carlos."

Any and all info would be appreciated -- and of course, if stuff is supposed to be confidential, then leave it that way. Thanks!

I have heard from a very reliable source that "Carlos" was very recently cleared by DNA matching.

That seems good enough for me.

Anyone else finding Shelby's book kind of...strange? He seems to gloss over important details about certain crimes and the book itself is chock full of typos and poorly edited sentences and paragraphs. I was really hoping for something a lot better from someone who actually worked on the case as a cop. Plus, the whole thing about EAR scaring his kid....hmmmm, finding that hard to believe.

Well, he's a retired cop, not a writer, so yes, there were a few errors of grammar and form here and there. As for "glossing over" - there may be information about the investigation he cannot release. I believe his story about EAR being on his roof. Shelby lived in one of EAR's comfort zones, EAR was known to be on roofs - often looking in windows upside down as Shelby described, and this is not the first story I've heard of EAR "visiting" somebody involved in the case. I have no proof other than Shelby's word - which I have no reason to doubt.

Can you share any of these "visits"?

It would also be great if the posters in the know were able to update the rest of us on some of the POIs mentioned by Shelby.

Just to clarify - my understanding is "Carlos" was cleared AFTER shelby's book went to print. "Carlos" was considered to be a pretty good suspect - there was some disappointed when he was cleared.

I can speak of two incidents I know of personally. I was asked to house-sit the home where attack #9 took place because there were indications EAR prowled there after the attack and left some indications he had been there. The mother of victim #9 told my mother that LE had told her of other incidents of EAR prowling victim's homes after attacks. Also a suspicious person fitting EAR's description was seen coming out of the drainage canal into the yard next door to Victim #9's house two nights after the attack. He was seen by my ex-girlfriend's father.

There are some other incidents, but I'll have to look back through some notes, etc. for what few details I have.

Interesting news re: Carlos. He looked good from the information in HaP. But then there are so many that look good...

Re: the "visits", I thought you meant people other than the victims. It doesn't surprise me one bit that he returned to the homes of some of his victims. In fact, what surprises me is that he didn't return to victimise a previous victim a second time.

I have heard from one investigator that a couple of the retired LE investigators have taken extra safety precautions specifically because they believe that EARONS either has or will be coming after them. This same investigator suggested I do the same which is heeded advice.

I've gotten that impression as well -- though I've never spoken to any investigators -- just watched their interviews in documentaries.

Do those you are in contact with believe the EAR/ONS is still alive, or are they just taking prudent measures in case he is?

I think anybody who steps forward in a public way on this case should be careful and alert.

And, yes, the person who passed along this warning believes that EARONS is alive and in a position to carry out threats (i.e. not incarcerated).  I have no idea how specific these beliefs are and didn't ask - I just loaded the shotgun and and placed it by the headboard.

LE has had over 13 yrs to clear this Carlos guy by DNA and they wait until just after Shelby's book is released to do so? Are you freaking serious?
