At first blush, that's exactly what it seems like: someone was trying to link a known prisoner to the VR crimes. Of course, that immediately got my hair standing on end because it's just the freakish sort of thing the actual perp would want people to think someone legitimately working on the case was thinking.

My brain works this two ways...As you said, one possibility is that VR returned "home" to find that there was renewed interest in the case and that locals, people from his turf, were essentially hunting him...and posing as a PI would be an excellent way to do a bit of direct canvassing to see who'd been spoken to...perhaps just the ones he might have remembered making mistakes at or not pulling off as well as he'd wanted or ones where maybe he felt he'd revealed a little too much of himself...

I also could easily see him going back to certain homes posing as a PI with some weird story like this just to make contact again. For this kind of guy, live "trophies" would be the ultimate high...up close and personal. As he's telling this tale about prisoners and suspicions, he's watching their expressions, feeling the changes in their emotional state...

If Port could, since I have lent my files, maybe she can enlighten on this ransacking. I think I remember electricity was off, all cupboards and drawers in kitchen were open, padding in teenager's bra was torn out, the lining up of panties (or this may have been where they were put on a pillow). The teenager went to Whitney and her picture had been in the paper. the father was a teacher at Mt. Whitney and also sold cars (Cadillacs). The woman got a telephone call right after her husband left for work, and also someone knocked on her front door and covered the peephole so she couldn't see them.

The gun was stolen at ransacking #84. A necklace and one silver dollar were stolen also and male boxer shorts were placed in a line down the hallway. Female clothing thrown about.



The bra incident is from ransacking #85. 2 photos were stolen and one earring. Bikini panties were thrown on bed. The teenage victim was a pageant winner. This home is where the wife received the call and had someone ring her doorbell and cover the peep hole.

  as for the PI in above story actually being the VR, wouldnt that be an awfully bold and quite possibly stupid move to make?he gave the elderly couple his card which may or may not have been real..i mean still, that story just doesnt add up, it doesnt make sense..

Couldn't agree more that the story doesn't make sense. I think that Xuilan's well stated explanation (last paragraph of her post) makes the most sense, even though it gives me the chills just to think about him revisiting.

You bring up a point regarding weird things the VR/ONS did. Did you eliminate EAR on purpose?

no i just forgot to include EAr in that sequence...reading the old AETV thread about the VR just keeps on strengthening the idea that Vr just got his kicks in being a complete weirdo..breaking into one home to steal jewelry just to put it into a neighbors home etc etc..i mean wth?

  it does make sense that a guy like VR might try to put on the PI disguise to relive an old crime kind of like BTK did with his antics...who knows..

Him being "warned to stop pursuing the case" of course feeds into some of the conspiracy theories that have been popular with some members here, and maybe there is something to it, I don't know.

Without more information, it could mean a number of things, though:

- Was he warned to stop pursuing a particular POI because they honestly had reason to believe the POI wasn't the culprit and it could border on harassment?
- Was he warned to stop pursuing the case as a whole because he was no longer active on the force and they felt it wasn't his duty to involve himself in LE matters?
- Was he warned to stop pursuing the case because he was still on the force and they felt it wasn't a valuable use of his time?

You all know much more about the Visalia situation than I do, but I feel without more information and context, this may add unnecessary fuel to the fire for some people who are convinced of an overarching conspiracy to protect a "VIP" POI (ugh, so many acronyms... VIP/POI, EAR/ONS, etc.).

Wish I had a answer, but I don't think any of the three points hits the mark. I remember hearing about a lot of corruption in our DA's office in the 70's so I think someone was being protected, whether that person was the VR or not. Just my thoughts. McGowen may have had a VIP/POI, but who is to say that McGowen was right? it could be that that POI's family just didn't like their VIP son scrutinized.

Yes, valleykane, most of us find the VR case interesting, especially as it may merge into the EAR and ONS cases.
