I think your critical thinking and probing of all the possibilities is very important, because it demands that we interrogate a theory or idea, and I think interrogating the hell out of all our beliefs is extremely important, especially insofar as this case is concerned. So I certainly don't think you are arguing with me. I value your input very much and I think you make excellent points. We have to apply this kind of critical approach to any theory, and I think the questions you are asking are good ones. Unfortunately, I don't think I can answer the question regarding the amount of scrutiny he would come under from so and so for missing class or getting poor grades. I'm guessing he lived alone - I definitely think he was an off-campus type person, probably living by himself in an apartment where his comings and goings would not have garnered much notice. As for his marks and how he managed to keep his head above water, your guess is as good as mine.
As as far as playing the devil's advocate, in this case I think it's just advocating a critical approach to any theories or ideas we come up with to ensure that we cover all the angles. That's a good thing, to be sure. Maybe more like playing angel's advocate...of course, Lucifer - or the devil - was an angel after all
