The EAR had some unusual skills, the example below seems like he had the skills of a ... psychic.
From Crompton's book (Softback, pages 382-385)... the April 4th, 1979 attack in Fremont ... (attack #44)
As the EAR approaches the victim's house, there are no lights on; no one is at home.
Outside the house, the EAR makes a noise trying to get inside. The next door neighbor looks out the window, then comments to his wife: "the next door neighbors are on vacation, so they can't get hurt". Next day, a cop says "The next door neighbors heard him [EAR] push open the gate and heard the glass break, but didn't call [police] because they knew no one was home."
The victim and her husband then recount the incident ... "Well, we left our house around 6:45 to go to dinner in San Jose ... We got home around 9:00 and didn't notice anything wrong. The door to the bedroom with the broken window was closed."
The female victim continues: "... something woke me up and I saw this man standing in the doorway ... he had a flashlight and a gun pointed at us."
Astonishing!
How is it that with nobody home, the EAR knew to just wait for the victim to return that night? And ...
How is it that the EAR not only knew the couple would return, but knew more than the victim's next door neighbor?
Does this perp sound like some low-life who works in auto salvage or someone driving a tow truck? To me it sounds more like someone who is ... psychic!
Sorry, but with incidents such as this, I just can't buy into the auto salvage / tow truck line of work.
