Speech Impediment

Hey all,

So for a while after listening to the 1978 call to a victim a lot and thinking that he has a slight speech impediment - a slight lisp (I have a speech impediment) and we know due to victims that he definitely stuttered a lot. I also think he has something called "Echolalia". Echolalia can be meaningless repetition of another person's spoken words as a symptom of psychiatric disorder but it can also be meaningless repetition of his own words as well. There are situations where this has been the case (in a hospital setting, not murder or rape) Of course there could be lots of reasons why he does/did repeat his words but I do think this is why. Echolalia becomes worst during periods of anxiety and whenever things have gone off what we understand as being his "script" he gets anxious. So I've been re listening and doing some small editing of calls and seeing what the outcome of each call seems to be. I wanted to share with you guys and see what you think.

1978 "GONNA KILL YOU" Call

Then I did some messing around in Audacity, unfortunately it doesn't do much that I'd like it to compared to paid software, but it has served it's purpose for me. I wanted to try and slow down and isolate his speech. I really wanted to focus on his ch's and try and avoid too much annoying high frequency feedback due to the bad audio recording quality back then and the end result is this: soundcloud.com/zode-4/speech-impediment

*Note* I had already amplified this edit when I was lowering the tempo, so there is only technically 2 edits I have done for this call. "IS RAY THERE" Call

In this recording it doesn't really seem apparent with S's but he does talk fast. It also doesn't seem overly apparent when Aweshucks slowed it down slighty but again, its hard with the audio quality from back then. I'm not sure if it is his accent or if he has a minor issue with R's which is also another common denominator with speech impediments also, but I amplified the "is ray there" calls volume up so you guys can listen also and decide for yourselves: soundcloud.com/zode-4/amplified-is-ray-there-call 

I then did what I did with the "*" part of the "Gonna Kill You" call to see if it shows anything more and it does seem like he does have an issue with R's: soundcloud.com/zode-4/is-ray-there-speech-impediment

CALL TO POLICE

I then slowed down the speed as much as I could without making the call quality any worst and changed the tempo as I did with the others: soundcloud.com/zode-4/ear-call-to-police-speech-impediment-edit1

SUMMARY

My biggest question I'm working on with all of this is...is it just his accent, is he a lazy speaker or does he have a speech impediment? I don't think it could possibly be just 1 of those in this case. It's very hard to disguise a speech impediment no matter how small. I think it's likely he does have a slight speech impediment but I also think it's his accent, and his talking too fast rather than lazy speaking.

This is just my findings and opinion on what I've found of course.

This is awesome! I would also welcome you to try for the voices in the background of the first call, that is always welcomed when someone does it.

As for him having a speech impediment, it certainly makes sense and I am sure we've discussed that possibility before. The strongest one to support this was the dumbfuckers call. Also, thank you for putting up the IS RAY THERE call at the higher speed, hearing him like that meant something. Even if people don't believe he was a sixteen year old kid or something like that, hearing him like this really does give some perspective.

You heard that whisper too? Sounded like he was mouthing the words, "Thank you" or something? I'd love to hear more about that.

My idea is that he had high anxiety, particularly when making phone calls back to his victims. While he knew it was dangerous though, you could hear him getting off on it so to him, it was well worth the risk I suppose. Especially in the call where you can hear people in the back ground. Once again, I implore you to dig into those voices because you know what you're looking for. A lot of folks on here do that and are awesome at it, definitely better than people that LE outsource too apparently... but a new take on it with the work to show is such a boost of hope here because it helps so much! Even if it doesn't "solve" the case, to add perspective to it is oh, so, helpful

Furthermore, my brother grew up with a speech impediment and swearing was his resort whenever he got frustrated or anxious. So there's a thought.

Those are interesting observations from Zode, and combined with what is generally considered to be a high voice, I think it is a fair assumption that EAR/ONS had an unusual way of speaking, in his life outside his crimes.

I'll give it my best shot but I need to find something much better than Audacity lol so i meet rev visit these calls with better software. I have a diploma in web development, so if I can be of any use with coding, feel free to ask. I personally think he is at least 18, but potentially 19 or 20 because as far as I know, but could be wrong but if he were to apply to the military (and of gotten rejected aka kicked out in his mind) he would of had to be 18? The faster speed you can definitely hear the speech impediment and I agree with you about the anxiety. I think he talked so fast in calls where he was talking and not whispering out of nerves, but couldn't resist calling because as you said, he got off on it. I need to amp up the volume more and find a way to clear it because he was definitely breathing a lot but you don't notice it until you lower tempo so i'd love to know what he was whispering or if it was just breathing..if he had asthma etc.

I resort to getting really anxious about talking at all with someone I haven't spoken to before (an online friend on skype for the first time for example) that I literally say the word wrong and have to repeat it slowly to get it out sometimes. I have a habit of talking too fast when i'm anxious or overly excited and have too much information to say at once. I do clichely "info dump".

Speaking of LE. I just got back from the police station here. I had to pick up stolen belongings from an aggravated robbery that happened to me last month. Guy completely destroyed everything. My Mum's handbag and my wallet couldn't be forensically looked at from it being soaked in mud...yet the idiot didn't take 30c or sell Mums $200 handbag on eBay. Which got me thinking about ear/ons being able to do what he did with little mistakes even when things went badly for him. Like when we saw this guys face, he ran from the house falling over outside. Admittingly, he didn't drop anything. He was so calm up until then. Where as ear/ons seemed calm even when he was seen. Like he never fell off the bike from peddling so fast, or ran into things. He was able to jump a fence. I think the recon is what made him overly calm, even under stress. It was talking where he seemed most anxious. 

Also, this may be a very long stretch and most likely not going to be easily done, if at all. But you can put a tracking log on websites that records the ip of someone who attends the website, how long, what pages, how long on each page, what browser they're using etc and it's perfectly legal. It's possible admins could go through logs as annoying as it is and see if any POI's ip's show up if you can get access to that because we can almost guarantee he visits this site. Easy way to re live his crimes, like documentaries, and books. Feeds his ego and I know if it were me, i'd be a frequent flyer and I don't think LE would bother. i can't think of the word I mean right now for it being extremely annoying (I've been groggy from epilepsy lately) I don't think it would be an entirely dead end, just annoying but still very circumstantial but would add another tick of suspicion to a POI.

Agreed. I think if we find who he is, most people who knew him wouldn't be entirely surprised. I think he probably was quite an unusual individual in life. Even if he did blend in physically.

Since the beginning of our website here, many posters have speculated that the killer visits this site. But though we do track IP addresses, among other things, we cannot know specifically who is using the computer associated with that address. Even if the user is a man we would have no way of knowing his poi status. Additionally, IP addresses tend to be generalized in terms of geographic location.

Since the beginning of our website here, many posters have speculated that the killer visits this site. But though we do track IP addresses, among other things, we cannot know specifically who is using the computer associated with that address. Even if the user is a man we would have no way of knowing his poi status. Additionally, IP addresses tend to be generalized in terms of geographic location.

I understand but what I mean is that it would be worth cross checking with POI's amongst users POI'S on this board who are privy to such info as though it couldn't be stated who was using the computer like you said and if in fact that person was or wasn't going through a proxy or hacked into someones router, it could further add to suspicious and warrant higher on a list of viable POI's among researchers on this board to focus on. Like there could be 3 very strong likely suspects for example, that most on here don't and can't know the name to, but if his IP was in fact logged onto the board, though it doesn't prove anything beyond a person being interested in the case, I think it would make him potentially higher on the list, if others IP's weren't logged due to the fact that the killer did follow media, showed interest in having a movie made about himself, I believe he definitely has watched, maybe even downloaded documentaries about himself and would frequent the board as you said was speculated. Regardless though and since I'm on the topic of router hacking, I don't think he would have the technical knowledge to hack into routers without leaving a digital footprint anyway, but I do think he'd have the patience to learn or at least try to. However I don't think it would serve his purpose of re living his crimes to bother too much with technicality like that as he was too audacious. Using a regular proxy is easy enough but again I'm really not convinced that he would bother doing that to visit a board, or even download/watch a documentary about himself because it's not something I'd see him feeling the need to hide behind, nor really need to unless he was the "Arthur Allen Leigh" of the case lol. I certainly don't think he would pay for a VPN either. Too expensive for something unnecessary. I do think his IP is somewhere amongst the thousands though. Combing through that for something that could lead to a dead end investigation wise I could understand fruitless to bother and I know wouldn't do a thing LE wise but it would be of interest if anyone gets into slow phase within their investigation. Just to try new avenues to see if it can open any new doors to look into if it's getting slow. IP addresses are pretty much useless for. this purpose though. If I told you my IP right now, literally all you'd learn from it is the name of the company my phone is registered to and a very rough idea of my location. To find out who I am, you'd need a court order.

Some provocative thoughts in this thread. Agree there's definitely some affect in his voice, besides how downright creepy he is.

On the possibility of the perp. or a significant POI frequenting site/forums where the crimes are being discussed, I think that's highly possible. Not sure they want to become a poster or anything.

But then I think of the Maury Travis case that was featured on Forensic Files where his use of a graphic from Expedia allowed LE to identify the suspect based on his ip address on the site log. Pretty amazing. So if our guy is frequenting sites where the case is discussed, it's possible he's using a public computer to avoid being tagged.

I guess I don't quite follow your line of reasoning; sorry.  A "poi" is a "person of interest", which equates to ... suspect.  We do have IP addresses for all "members" of this website.  But admin would have no way of knowing which, if any, of these addresses corresponds to a computer used by a suspect, any suspect.  The Proboards website is a website for anonymous posters.  For example I don't know who you are, and you don't know who I am.  And as thrax said, to determine if a suspect is posting on this board, we would need a court order.

One thing to remember.  As a message board, we have no law enforcement authority whatsoever.  We do not investigate this case.  If a poster wishes to investigate on his or her own, they may do so, at their own risk.  But we do not support it.  Such poster research could, in theory, be potentially dangerous, and/or unlawful.

So any attempt to try to match IP address to suspects (poi's) would be the responsibility of law enforcement, not the administrators or owners of this message board, nor even Proboards.

Zode, one of the main detectives in the ONS murders is a computer forensics expert and some of the detectives do keep an eye on message boards. In one of the books, it talks a bit about an encounter one of them had with a poster on a message board whom he thought may have been his POI. They can get a warrant for the records if they need to check anything.

I would expect EAR to be technology savvy and stay one step ahead of the game like he usually did. I would also expect him to take part in forums via a secure means of doing so. He loved to taunt and pull the wool over the eyes of LE. A public computer location can be easily traced and he would know that, imo.

legally, yes. But if whoever already knows the POI'S name, no laws are broken.

I understand. Yes, I knew POI is person of interest, but thank you for taking the time to mention that in case I didn't. Always helpful nonetheless
