Here is a summary of what happened and it seems the prowler he heard earlier was waiting for him.  It led detectives to believe the attacker could have been a relative, employee or someone who knew the station/car rental owner.  Note that the club the prowler uses fits the description of the club in #3. It would have been interesting to know if any of this victim's employees matched the description of EAR. Relatives were cleared.


Victim says he is awakened at 3:50 a.m on July 16th by the sounds of someone walking on his patio in the backyard. Victim tried to go back to sleep, but keeps hearing noises so he gets up.  He gets ready for work and walks out into the garage and opens the garage door. He hears footsteps and sees a man coming under the still raising garage door and heading right for him. He has a club like object in his hand and proceeds to beat Victim on his head and face. Victim states he was sure the man was trying to kill him. He said the man had a brown mask on that appeared homemade. He was wearing brown gloves and thick soled hiking boots. Victim said the club was about 2’ long and the diameter of the handle was about the same as a shovel, but the end he was being struck with felt like it contained sand.



Victim fell to the ground and the suspect continued to strike him mercilessly. Victim crawled under his car and held on to the drive train of the car. The suspect continually tried to pull him out from underneath the car, but was unable. The suspect also continued battering Victim’s legs while he was under the car, but he said he held on because he was sure if he came out from under the car he would be killed. The suspect accidentally pulled Victim’s pants down in the process of trying to pull him out from under the car and then took his wallet from his back pocket and fled on foot. Victim estimated he was struck over 50 times, but was able to crawl to a neighbor’s house to get help.



He is hospitalized with severe injuries including massive facial and head trauma. Both eyes are swollen shut and he lost a lot of blood. He recovered.

This is very intriguing and so much more detail than what is in HAP, where it is stated that the intruder was already rummaging through the tool box as Ludolf stated, which had been my impression as well. The viciousness certainly points to mayhem not robbery as the main motive. Thanks for this detailed information. 

Iirc, Shelby believed that the club used in both attacks was the type issued to LE pre-1970's. Does this jive with what you have? Do we know anything about this intended victim's life going forward that may offer a clue?

Here is another reason I believe Q has some valid ideas but has gone off track by focusing so much on 'auto wrecking' specifically.In one post, he calls SB/Goleta 'the Northern terminus of the LA auto wrecking' business.

Sorry, but he is just wrong about this. SB has never been the 'Northern terminus' of anything related to LA. I can hear the howls of protest from Santa Barbarians! (For the record, SB is technically 'West' of LA, not 'North', but that is a whole other issue.) Especially back in the late '70's, early '80's when Goleta was still  very largely agricultural and industry even today is mostly light industry.

I won't go into a rant here, but at the time we are discussing, the 101 didn't even exist as we know it now. When it got to SB it turned into more of a surface street that had stop lights at the cross streets of downtown. It was a bit of a winding meandering mess that slowed things down considerably if you were going up or down the coast. It was not until the 1980's that all this changed and the elevated freeway and on and off ramps were built. It was a monumental construction project that torn out several blocks of downtown, regraded mass swaths of land, etc. I thought it was finished in 1981 but in looking at the CalTrans websites it looks like it wasn't considered finished until 1988. I first drove through in 1993 but I honestly can't remember. I think Agatha should chime in with her memories of the character of SB and Goleta at the time in question.

Yes, there is an odd instances of murder and auto wrecking being connected in SB. Sandra Garcia, who was murdered on East Beach in 1970 with her fiance (they were stabbed) was the daughter of the owner of Garcia's Auto Wrecking. BUT she also worked for the local DMV and that may be the more salient point IF anyone thinks that case is related.(Which is obviously very open to question.)  Garcia's Auto Wrecking is long gone. There was also a Garcia's AW in the Sac area, but that only operated beginning in the 1990's or 00's (I'd have to check) and is closed, and the family doesn't seem to be related to the SB Garcia's.

Q has no way to connect his theory with Goleta. EAR/ONS had to have a connection with that particular neighborhood in Goleta and I believe he lived there at least part of the time. My humble opinion is that we need to first look for individuals who lived in both cities or had family who did. His level of research is daunting and is to be commended, but I think now it has to be used as a springboard for the rest of us.

Arch left the old board a decade ago because there was about to be a big break in the case.

There is apparently always a lot going on behind the scenes, but you'll have to wait until a certain book is ready for publication to find out more.

It is my fault that people want to argue with me and get upset, because I won't give them information I am not at liberty to divulge, about how I know that? For anyone who doesn't like my posts, please go ahead and block them. It should cut down on the amount of *ing I have to deal with, because I happen to know more about certain things than some of you.

Suspects are being eliminated on an ongoing basis by means of DNA testing. The investigators won't know they have EAR/ONS, until they have him of course.
