About disguising the voice, I had been thinking he disguised his voice so as not to be recognized but then why would he not disguise his voice on the recordings.  So yes, of course that makes sense "He LOWERS his voice in attempt to sound more commanding" it's not to disguise a weird little voice, (I don't think he voice was weird, it sounded normal to me).  But then I have another comment,  why would he not be afraid people would recognize his voice on a recording.  Did he not consider the possibility the recording would be played for the public?  It wasn't, but how could he know that.  Strangely the only one that was released was the disguised voice.  What good did that do?

 ^i agree, pointless to release disguised voice call but not the others which again, makes me think LEs blunders is what kept this case from being solved.. the recording werent played for the public but surely they were played for some of the rape victims, correct?this is how LE came to conclusion that the phonecalls are more than likely GSK?to me, the 'Ray' caller and 'dumb fucker' ccaller sound alike, and the 'im gonna kill you' callers voice is disguised so hard to tell..

I don't want to blame LE when it isn't warranted.  I was just told that current technology and a lot of work went into cleaning up those tapes to be able to hear what was being said.  Thinking further though, did they need to be cleaned up because they were so old and in bad condition or were they always in bad condition.

I think the two pop culture inspirations for GSK's phone calls and voice disguise during the attacks were the films BLACK CHRISTMAS and DIRTY HARRY. In BLACK CHRISTMAS, the killer makes "I'm gonna kill you" phone calls in a creepy voice. In DIRTY HARRY, the Scorpio Killer wears a ski masks, speaks in a fey but sharp and exaggerated, threatening voice. Not exactly the same as GSK's routine, but these are the sort of free-floating media tropes that influenced him, IMHO.

^^Prom Night had some creepy phone-calls as well but i think it was made in mid 80s...?Black Christmas caller was bizarre and most similar to EAR in that the caller was all over the place, crying, screaming, saying things that made no sense etc etc..

Both PROM NIGHT and WHEN A STRANGER CALLS were heavily influenced by BLACK CHRISTMAS, which was a hit in its day. HALLOWEEN was inspired by it as well.

This should give a fair idea of what kind of planning, EAR put into his activities:

#30   rcvd daily calls from man with funny voice two weeks prior
#31   rcvd calls starting month prior
#32   rcvd prank calls starting two months prior

I do not think he disguised his voice because someone might recognize it.  I think the calls were part of his fantasy and I think LE nailed it when they said he had to lower his voice to sound commanding.  He must have been self conscious of his actual voice, which, while perhaps not effeminate, may have been higher pitched causing him to speak softly to not emphasize it.

Did any of these people call the police?

I too think the deep voice was a device to instill fear but it had the added feature of being part of a disguise. Everything this guy did before, during and after the attacks was designed for the purpose of getting away with "it". Some people just can't play by the rules and EAR was one of them. And something about the cars just occurred to me. Maybe he didn't use one for daily transportation. Suppose the only vehicle he owned in his real name was a motorcycle. Then it occurred to me that in Contra Costa County there was a suspicious fake real estate salesman described in "Sudden Terror" as driving an orange BMW (I think). Real estate salesmen don't drive orange cars. At least none of the ones I know. All this fits with somebody who just had to display a slightly anti social attitude all the time but didn't want to make it a real issue. His mid-life crisis probably consisted of buying a Buick.

This is the caption I found for this photo. I don't know if that color is the color of Pippin's BMW or not. It seems strange, if the Valiant and the Olds and jack Grey's incident are true, that gsk would have been so careless as to drive such an easily identifiable car like an orange BMW.

And, just saying, if the afro and the other wig is true, could the blonde hair have been a wig also?

And, about the cross dressing, when Hetrick was finally arrested for his involvement in the Delorean case, he had been having a meal at the La Cage Aux Folles.  Still it seems like an odd place to go just before you get arrested in one of the biggest FBI stings of 80's.

I have said before that orange has always been am unusual colour for BMWs, and that BMWs were much less common in America in the 1970s than they are now; unless it had had a respray, finding that car should not be like looking for a needle in a haystack...

Around 1976 my girlfiend's father bought a BMW like that. It was the first one I had seen in our fairly large city. First true sports car/racer I drove (of course, later I piloted that Porsche 917 in Le Mans.)

Lonnie Franklin jr (the Grim Sleeper) drove a pimped up, customised distinctive orange Pinto.

He was a serial killing ex-con so was hardly keeping a low profile!  

A surviving victim even described the car and later took police to within three doors of Franklin's house.

He was far from a criminal mastermind although he got away with murder for many years (including long dormant periods).

After he was caught, Franklin's house (which was right in the middle of the 'killing zone') was found to be full of photographs of his victims and other momentos such as jewellery.

Similar to EAR in some ways... Although EAR seems a lot more calculating to me.

Maybe EAR bought unregistered cars for cash and dumped them... would he be ok with driving a car that stood out knowing he would soon be dumping it?

I tend to agree with Albion who said EAR would avoid driving such a car... but you never know with this damn case...

There is no known reward for the EAR. The only reward that is said to be available is by Russ Whitmeyer for $100K. He once told me he would have to sell his house for it. I would not put that 100K in the bank before the check clears. LOL
