If the reports of EAR sweating/smelling lessened or ceased later on in his spree? Did victims notice a drop in body heat during the longer invasions where most people would have cooled off? I know the heat/odor issue have been discussed but not the above questions. Nor has lithium been mentioned which might create a lead. Probably became redundant at some point so maybe not documented. I am fascinated by the fact that EAR may have been on a common mood altering PRESCRIPTION medication! It might also have some bearing on the breaks in his activity as EAR.
The body heat that people felt in cold weather might be more than just from exertion when you add in the other possible symptoms. The area surrounding the eyes, high pitched voice, auditory challenges, and bad breath can be attributed to either an endocrine problem in which case no change would be noted unless he sought medical treatment (which was spotty and limited), or lithium/biker meth use would be the most common drugs associated with most of the symptoms.
Endocrine disorders could account for many of his idiosyncrasies including the voice/body type and development/anxiousness/sweat production and so on. Probably not treated at all as at the time it was difficult to treat properly.
Lithium wasn't the most common street drug but was used for bipolar and schizophrenic disorder as one of the frontline drugs at the time. Autism spectrum disorders were often classified as schizophrenia in young patients. It's side affects can include a dry mouth (causing gum disease bad breath etc), and thryoid endocrine disorders. Some of them create excessive metabolism/heat/nervousness/auditory amplification problems/insomnia/skin challenges(white calves in Cali anyone?) etc. Often prescribed though. I find it unlikely EAR would have continued to take this medication except if forced by say a parent OR if he found the insomnia/activity boost side effect to be worth the downside. I am also researching the length of time the side affects can last.
Biker meth would answer most of his symptoms except the voice. Among most of the well known side effects but I am not sure if he could have "held it together" enough to commit all of the crimes he did and not get caught.
Currently looking at the weather on the days of his assaults as EAR while I wait to see if anyone has this info. Mostly sub 60 degree temps during attacks with /littleno wind for the most part. This would be for noise purposes. He skipped hot nights and when it was windy didn't seem to be as active. Probably an auditory challenge with the wind and paranoia at not being able to tell if he was detected. Also looking at auditory amplification disorders and which drugs can cause them. The temperature avoidance/wind issue might have something to do with when he was active.
