Nothing against Richard Shelby, but he tends to ramble a bit and jump around from topic to topic in the podcasts. Given our interest in this lead, I think it might be useful if we were to compare notes on what we've learned from the latest interview. Below is my initial effort to reconstruct the '73 incident based on Shelby's words.
Does the narrative below sound right? I'm asking everyone, especially Dr. Doogie. Again, this is an effort to summarize Shelby's story as related in the podcast, not to add anything to it. It's up to DrD to weave it into a more complete account. (Hint, hint.)
In 1973 an 18-year old nursing student lived in Carmichael with two other teenage women. They rented the top add-on section of a house that had an exterior stairway.
One day she left the apartment to tend for a pet cat that had been hit by a car. When she returned the door was still locked, but she noticed that her life-size (3-4 foot) doll had been moved. Her boyfriend found it on the floor between the washer and dryer, right below an attic door that was slightly ajar.
There were other similar incidents with the doll which was moved "all around the place". Once she found her new dress on a roommate's bed, with stains left on it. She kept her jewelry in a bowl and one day a single piece was missing. Her school yearbook also went missing.
Then in May, a few days after Mothers Day, came the assault. That particular day she had to walk home from the American River Hospital because her normally reliable Mustang was in the shop. Wearing her nursing uniform, she walked down Engle Road and turned left on to Walnut.
A young guy in a green Corvette pulled up and offered her a ride. He was 5'9" and 165 pounds with light brown hair that was cut a bit short for the times. He wore a white T-shirt and light blue corduroy pants. His black military boots had the highest shine she had ever seen.
She initially refused the offer, but changed her mind after some conversation. He seemed to know something about her and claimed that he sometimes visited the guy who lived across the street. She got into the car, and the expected two and a half minute drive turned into a six hour ordeal.
Shelby didn't go into any detail of the attack, other than to say that the victim left huge red welts on her attacker's face. This young woman then reported the incident to the cops.
Then comes the part about Shelby's investigation, but that's another post.
I would love to know what the stains were. This incident definitely has got my curiosity going. Hopefully Dr D can shed some more light about it.
