Those ski masks were replicas! I think it is correct to say that EAR created a "driveway layer" here, so there's a pie shaped lot on the corner that gives a good reference point. these images may well explain that last erased house. I believe the sidewalk next to House #5 was a good way out but EAR may have also considered it as a way in. This is powerful evidence of abstract thinking which may explain Ear's successful planning and eluding.

I really believe he did many other maps ,each as intricate and detailed and really think the map is a huge clue (and also the reason he was so successful at escape and alluding anyone giving chase).
The map(s) have been seen by other people.
If anyone can recognize this style of map ,they can tell you where they saw it and who they saw it with and lead to EAR/ONS.
I think the map is big to helping solve this, bigger than "replica" evidence that frankly isn't unique enough looking to jog a memory . This map and linking it to the neighbor WOULD jog someone's memory .
Discovery of this map and then you being able to find the neighborhood is huge Saund10295! Thank you !

Intuitiva: there definitely could be a better match for (what I think are) the strip mall and gas station. The danville library between the trail and creek looked good for a second. If it were the library that might be where he got subdivision maps or telephone numbers. I checked downtown and the sites of the other attacks. The dogs tracked over to delta way and it looks exactly like a mini diablo west.

ok, I will look into that section as well...libraries might be an answer, but I think that it's more of an issue of stalking than anything else. However, how would he know such a good location to do it in - it seemed like he knew exactly where to go, and during a time where everything was either from trial and error or looking at maps it seems very difficult to do...I'll let you know what I find out.

I noticed that too unless the library was there next door and it was just an addition. That other building curves upwards like the strip mall on EAR's map though. I wonder if the upside down exclamation mark ~ tractor trailer looking EAR symbol could mean sports field. Erased house #2 has a basketball hoop; the HOA/Pool has a basketball court; and that future library site was a baseball diamond. these are also the only places you see that symbol on EAR's map.

It's an endless frustration...lol  I'll be checking the areas over the next couple of weeks, we will figure this out, along with getting some good information on the layout of the area as well.

At that time, the library was at 825 Hartz Way, Danville.

Hi, I'm a foreign guy who got interested in this case, and this is my first post.

First of all, excuse my english.
Secondly, I read daily about the case, but I'm definitely a newbie.

I signed up because I have some clear thoughts about this map, and in the spirit of trying to help out, I'll share them here.
As probably many others here, I have a degree in Architecture, so I'm quite used to see plans and maps.
I quickly checked all the thread (one hour reading), but maybe I missed some points.
Most importantly, I obviously lack any direct knowledge of the places and of many topographical references you talk about. So, maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, some things seem apparent to me:

1) THE ROAD/ROADS
If I understand correctly, the original post by Saund proposed a mash-up of two different streets. Looking at the EAR map, I see no need for this. If you start following the road from the cul-de-sac, then make the bend, at the bottom of the drawn map you'll find the beginning af an "S", that's exactly what you have in the real world.
So, if I'm correct, EAR drew only the "upper half" of the proposed location, and then the map is "cut" at the bottom.
The angle between the roads is still not correct, but it's more similar to the angle you see in the aerial photo (90 degrees), unlike the topographic map, which shows a much more acute angle.
There are still many discrepancies, but this possibility eliminates the biggest one.

2) REFERENCE MAP
In this thread, many theorize that the map is drawn from recalling and observation, leading to some drawing mistakes.
To me, since the very first moment I saw it, it seemed a traced map. Or, at least, copied. But most probably traced. It really reminds me of many tracings I made when studying/working as an architect years ago.
Accuracy and details are just too good to be done without a top view - just too good. Nobody could draw such a map without reference, in my educated opinion. And if you notice, the detail is accurate but the pencil strokes are rough: typical of something you draw quickly, and with the help of a reference.
So, I agree with Beherit who said that this map is copied (or traced), also pointing out the details upon the commercial building's roofs.

3) AERIAL OR TOPOGRAPHICAL
If it's done with the help of a reference...
I read over and over, mostly in other threads, that this map is made from an aerial photo. To me, it rather seems done with the help of a topographical map - which, btw, was much easier to obtain at the time.
Contours of the houses and boundaries of the lots are very precise: something that is difficult to draw from an aerial photo, where shadows and trees can make things much less clear.
Other details such parked cars could be later additions by EAR.

4) INCONSISTENCIES
There are many, and the biggest one is obviously the lake.
This is my opinion, quite clear to say the least, I mean it's the most logical and simple (in Occam's razor spirit): that the drawing was traced from a developmental plan, I mean a preliminary plan or a proposed design for the area.
As anyone working in the construction field knows, there can be (and definitely there are) many variations to the first plan. The lake just sounds to me as the first, beautiful idea by an enterpreneur to develop the area, the perfect idea to sell future, yet-to-be-built houses, or raise funds. Then reality checks-in, and 99 times out of 100 you can't have your lake for a variety of reasons.
So, I guess we should look at the map with a grain of salt: many things stayed put and were built as advertised, other changed in subsequent plans. I know this can look like a convenient shortcut, but a) explains everything and b) happens very often in the real world.

That's it.

This scenario obviously gives weight to the widely proposed theory that EAR was in the construction business, someone who could have access to topographical maps, but, I would add, someone who needed to copy them, I mean he couldn't take the original maps with him, like a son stealing and copying maps from the dad or the boss.
This conclusion is just uneducated speculation, and definitely not my job.
But all the premises I wrote seem perfectly credible to me. Hope this helps out.

Ok, I just read that the draft plan theory was already proposed quite some time ago in another thread by TomBox. I wholeheartedly agree. The lake could be a pre-existent lake (though this could and should be fact-checked), and the draft plan could be drawn upon an hydro-geological map, that is something you can do in countryside areas, soon-to-be urbanized.
The more I think about it, the more the lake sounds as draft/developmental plan to me - either proposed lake or pre-existent lake.
If correct, this could confirm the construction connections - a common citizen with an unrelated job usually doesn't have access to such draft plans.

On looking at the Diablo Rd, Camino Tassaja area there is a seasonal water feature, a dam and drainage canals that would fit well the general plan of the map. Would only be a wetland or pond after a big rain event.

you just fell into a great match. look at Danville from E to W until you notice the large "peninsula" created by Camino Tasajara and Sycamore Valley Road. then, take a look at the concentric circles on the back of the map. Another identical match and they line up on one another.
