...and it would seems like someone has had some formal training and/or familiarity with these methods.
That is a good observation. Something I've pointed out before (probably earlier in this thread), is that he was very specific about the shapes of houses and other relatively minor details (skylights on buildings, etc.). What stands out in the other map you linked are the unique shapes of the houses.
While I don't think the GSK map is anywhere near professional quality, it does suggest some familiarity with residential map drawing. There are countless jobs that would use similar styles of maps, though, so it's not really a solid lead without having more info.
I have speculated before that he may have drawn the map based on what he observed during his prowls, but I think that would be next to impossible. I have also wondered if he was looking at a more professional map of a certain area and simply drew his own copy for his own purposes.
There are many areas (particularly country club type neighborhoods) in the EAR's attack radius that have similar features to the map that was found, but so far I haven't found one that was convincing enough for me to lend any real weight to it. I did find this one in Roseville that has a very similarly shaped lake with a neighborhood that has some fairly similar cul-de-sac type roads around it. There is also a commercial/light-industrial type of area nearby (though not in the exact arrangement as on the GSK map). The only thing is that this development seems very new (though it's hard to place a year on it). If we could figure out when it was actually built it may tell us something, though.
