I recently shared a conversation with friend from northern California who lived in the area during the E.A.R. attacks, and they had something to say about the Golden State Killer and Original Night Stalker monikers. They believe that the gravity in those names do not hold the weight that the East Area Rapist moniker does, therefore retarding the level of exposure that this case needs. Doing minimal research into the major headlines about the crimes committed by EARONS, particularly newspaper headlines from that late seventies era, I have to say that it is actually a pretty sound argument and I would like to know what you guys think. Here is what they had to say:
I don't know if it needs to be above the rest. But anytime you refer to the ONS - or GSK ... it means nothing to anyone, anywhere in Northern California. Zero.
This guy started up here. He was called the EAR. it's the only name anyone up here recognizes. California is a huge state. Media from central and Southern California does NOT reach here. And vise versa. Thus: two (or three) totally unrelated names for the same guy. Thus, the two guys were never even linked as one guy until later.
So when you post something re: GSK, it means nothing to any of the millions of people who live in the areas where he first struck and committed 50+ rapes..
Bottom line: not one person in the general population who read the news or saw the stories on tv, or who were victims of the crimes in the 1970's in Sacramento, Stockton, San Jose, Modesto, contra costa county, San Francisco would understand the names GSK/ONS... they wouldn't give the stories a second look.
Even if the body of your story contains the EAR moniker, you didn't grab them with your headline. Thus- they are lost
Those of you that know me best know that I prefer the ONS moniker as a sleuth but when thinking about the case as whole and how to promote it, thus spreading the widest possible interest and reaching out to people that may have actually heard about this case in the past and forgotten about it over time... I hope you understand the relevance in my friend's stance.
Let me know what you think.
