I realise my first post could be confusing, so I will clarify and provide a relevant thought experiment as an example.
As I stated above, between these two crimes, there is a noticeable shift in mo; our culprit starts removing evidence from the scenes. Before this he has been almost reckless in leaving evidence and leads behind. But at this stage he suddenly starts taking his ligatures with him.
To me, at least this implies he was spooked by Le getting close and decided to make it even harder for him to be caught.
Provided he was spooked, I'd say it was either due to media coverage or due to police questioning him. I will proceed with the former as my thought experiment.
Let's assume he changed his Mo in this subtle way due to media coverage, and he was trying to remove links (like the diamond knot, or the ligatures themselves).
If this information was released in only one small local newspaper, for example, then logically, as this pre-dates the internet he must have been within the geographical area of that paper to have seen it. This could possibly be used to look for Pois who lived in said area.
Of course, I know he could have travelled into such an area for work or just for anything. And this precludes the possibility of it being blanket media coverage, which I personally consider far more likely.
Can anyone supply media articles from the Smith murder to support or debunk this idea? As that was the last one he left this particular evidence behind, logically it was the one that provided the media coverage that spooked him.
