Here are my thoughts on his means of income - which are similar to others that have been mentioned on this board and by LE:

1.  I think he was in high school during the Visalia Ransacker crimes, if he was the VR.  Since the crimes were concentrated on weekends, he might have been visiting a separated/divorced parent.  Also, the VR had very little supervision which implies a lone parent who is either working or distracted by other circumstances.

2.  He escalates to the EAR crimes after high school.  He enlists in the Air Force and enters Basic Training during the Summer of 1977 - which would explain his hiatus from mayhem during that time period.  He is stationed at one of the Sacramento area Air Force bases.  He may have completed his tour of duty in the Air Force, but I think it is more likely that he received a "general discharge" due to strange behavior/poor performance.

3.  He acquires an entry-level construction/maintenance type of job.  He is dismissed from some of these jobs due to strange behavior/poor performance.  He can easily acquire other entry-level jobs of this type - throughout the state - because the requirements are minimal.

4.  He marries and has children   He advances to some form of more highly paid, skilled construction. The screening requirements for this type of job are more stringent.  He now needs to control his behavior.  He also does not want to risk capture and humiliation in front of his wife and children.

5.  He advances to a more permanent form of a construction/maintenance occupation.  An example of this would be a Facilities Manager for a company - a low profile job where he is a competent, reliable worker, yet a mostly invisible guy.

3. 1979 - the rapes substantially decline, he has the very close call in Danville, and he begins to "morph" into the ONS; it makes me think he is living in a situation where he has to account to someone for his whereabouts; he cannot spend as much time on reconnaissance. He spends more time fuming and fantasizing.

4. 1982-1985 - the ONS crimes stop during this period.

5. 2001+ - just because I think enough time has to pass (15-20 years from final ONS crime) for him to get complacent about evading LE before he is comfortable settling in a permanent job/location.

I think slumbergirl has gotten as close as anybody has. Hopefully we'll get a chance to find out when that phone call comes in and we find out who this guy is/was. If he wasn't in construction his life path was probably similar whatever he did.

You're scaring me, Slumbergirl...You've just described the guy I've been looking at to a "T".

Actually what I think is that law enforcement is comfortable looking where they always look in the underclasses and the working class. They've spent almost forty years looking there without result because that's not where EAR is/was. My opinion, clearly stated as such.

Im guessing EAR was unemployed during his crimes. Maybe doing something illegal for income, besides what he was known for. The fact that he preferred to hit upper middle-class homes means thats possible where his upbringing is, and he wasnt hurting for money. Im guessing he was in the military as well. Just not when he was active.

If EAR-ONS was an athlete, would it be possible he could be living off income from that? Minor league ball player? High School coach? Professional swimmer with aspirations for Olympics? Professional Trainer?

Don't various branches of the military sponsor and/or subsidize athletes enlisted in the service?

Having finally watched the documentary on Israel Keyes posted elsewhere on the board, I was wondering if LE/anyone has considered the fact EARONS may have been robbing banks to make ends meet. I'm sure it has been looked into but I haven't seen it mentioned on here. It would be an ideal profession for someone with his planning and surveillance skills, could explain his five-year absence (minor sentence behind bars?) and where he's been since 1986 (longer sentence behind bars?).

One thing to consider, it's not a given that EAR-ONS did not succeed in life after his ONS crimes. If he was military, it is not inconceivable that he is a high ranking officer or even working in the federal government to some degree. Hell EAR-ONS could be an Air force colonel for all we know.

Point I'm trying to make is that EAR-ONS may be more difficult to find now because his current position makes it difficult for people to believe him as a suspect. Why would you belief your company's CEO is a serial killer during the 70's and 80's?
