Sounds to me like you are wise folks.

 But it is not "surprising" that you shoot well...I have repeatedly seen women pick up shooting skills very quickly. (I started to  call my wife "deadeye" after she had just a half dozen trips to the range.)

There is probably a neurological basis for the rapid skill accomplishment-shooting quickly and accurately is a right side of the brain activity. The mind must quickly assemble a usable gestalt out of multiple spatial dimensions-then communicate the conceptual results to the muscle systems controlling the handgun and trigger. It is a non-verbal intuitive activity.
 
At the higher levels of skill, the shooter becomes "one with the gun" as though the shooter and the gun "understand" one another. A similar phenomenon is the natural flow of  nonverbal (and verbal) communication between two girlfriends. It just happens.

Much to some feminists' dismay- and generally speaking- males and females are different in brain as well as body. Female brains tend to  EXCEL at conceptual intuitive (right brain function) activity. So the (again generalizing)  lesser upper body strength, as well as smaller lung and heart capacity of females is immaterial to shooting, and their natural neurobiological advantages are paramount.

The 19th century saying.."God made men, but Sam Colt made them equal" is more properly stated "God made men and women, but Sam Colt made them equal."

Hence another old expression.."you can't rape a .38."  (assuming it is well handled by a determined woman.)

The social contract you posited(paraphrasing), "...that when in public, strangers must must prove that they are not aggressors at risk of being shot and that you feel you are well within your rights to do so" is pretty much the mindset of the George Zimmermans of the world.


Now Mitchell...tell me where I said someone must prove they are an aggressor or can be shot..show me that Mitchell.

You are indulging in the same intellectual dishonesty used by most anti-self defense types. I merely said someone invading your personal space is responsible for proving his innocent intentions. That's all. If they seem suspicious, put distance between yourself and the other person. And do not worry if it seems "rude."

Then you bring up George Zimmerman. There is a foolish man who put himself into a situation anyone with sense would have avoided. (He should have gone home and had a cup of coffee after he called 911.) Then the police would have handled the twerp who was surveilling apartments for possible burglary.

BUT Zimmerman was then put in a situation by Trevon Martin -who came out from a group of bushes and attacked Zimmerman.

The events that followed met the lethal force requirements of most of the states in the U.S. That is Trevon was on top of Zimmerman-Trevon placed him in restraint and was methodically beating him., beating him and reaching for his holstered weapon. Oh, and he was pounding Zimmerman's head into the concrete sidewalk. Those actions are why the jury acquitted him. The wounds suffered by Zimmerman show that-and the only eyewitness saw that and testified at trial to the restraint and beating. You do recall that Zimmerman was ACQUITTED. Correct?

Trevon would be alive today if he had not decided to be a tough guy. George Zimmerman's life would be totally different if he had exercised better judgment.

As for the proper justification to use lethal force...read "In the Gravest Extreme" by Massad Ayoob.

Martin and Zimmerman were a pair of fools cut from the same cloth.

Aggression and a willingness to escalate a situation in terms of violence or weaponry is a dangerous and counter-productive endeavour.

I apologize if I misunderstood your comment regarding good intentions. I was in the wrong, though you could have been more clear.

My view is that this is America. No one has to prove anything to me and they are owed nothing by me.

We actually had a prowler a little over a year ago. We were awoken in the middle of the night by my dog (a high content wolf dog) letting out a single bark like I've never heard before. Instincts kicked in and I grabbed my side arm, I told my wife to grab her phone and then get her pistol, told our other dog to stay with mom, and then opened the bedroom door so me and the wolf could go investigate. She took off running and growling and barking like I've never seen before so I told my wife to call 911 while I just took a knee and covered the top of the stair case. Our alarm wasn't going off so I knew no one was in the house, but if they were and they were able to get past a very large wolf dog they would catch a magazine full of .45 as soon as they rounded the corner at the top of the stairs.

Now here is where things get interesting, while my wife was on the phone with 911, she was informed that police had already been dispatched to our location. Turns out that these two gentleman had cut through a side yard of a house across the street and set off a motion detected light. This alerted that homeowner and when she looked out the window she saw two guys on the sidewalk in front of our house half bent over staring at our porch. They then approached the porch and climbed over the railing at the farthest point from our door. It was at this point that she called police. Our security system includes cameras, and the price we pay every month was worth it just to see those guys take off running and tripping over themselves once they heard the wolf coming down the stairs.

Moral of the story, multiple layers of defense. A watchful neighbor with a security system, locked doors and windows, a security system of our own, dogs, and firearms as a last resort. No clue why these guys targeted our home either. When arrested, they had masks and gloves but no weapons of any kind. Our house is in the middle of the street and in the middle of the neighborhood (they actually got turned around trying to drive out of the neighborhood, which led to their arrest). Anytime we are outside of the house our dogs come with us, so anyone targeting us personally would have seen multiple dogs.
